The Grand, along with the Continental and the Majestic, is the third of Saigon's classic colonial-style hotels. Originally dating back to 1930, the hotel was extensively renovated in 1995 and while this makeover left the property with a boring and decidedly ugly new wing, the original wing and its rooms retain their charm. With towering vaulted ceilings and polished parquet floors, and well furnished throughout, the old wing oozes charm, just as the new oozes blandness. Be sure to explicitly request a room in the old wing -- or stay elsewhere. The renovation left standing the street front facade, a classic example of French East-Asian architecture. The creaking original lift also survived -- be sure to take a ride. The location in the heart of Saigon's Dong Khoi district is close to unbeatable, with easy walking distance to some of the city's best shopping, eating and drinking. The hotel also has a moderate-sized L-shaped pool which is an ideal spot to escape the Saigon heat -- just watch the slippery floor tiles. Be sure to shop around for an internet rate.
