Description
Yellow House has an all-round great service for the needy traveller. The lobby contains a foreign exchange desk, a tour/travel desk including bus and train ticket bookings, and also a visa extension service. The guesthouse is a real labyrinth in which footsteps echo through hospital-like corridors. Almost unheard of in Vietnam hostels are dormitories -- YHH is an exception. Their mixed dorm sleeps eight and is 'cosy' to say the least. Two bathrooms are housed directly outside the door. All rooms are drab, uninteresting and basic. Many are tucked deep inside the building and hence are windowless -- maybe the free breakfast and numerous services will swing the decision. Another good option could be to share the four-bed room -- at $22 a night, you do the math. The upstairs rooms overlooking Bui Vien St catch a lot of traffic noise.

The place is popular with backpackers so it's always full, especially during the high season. We stayed at the Bui Vien branch, not the one off De Tham St.
For $15 in a double room that was spacious enough and had a/c and TV, it's okay. But our room being located right by the staircase is not conducive to a good night's sleep when people come and go at all hours. The room had high ceilings and was pretty tidy. Bathroom was okay too. The mattress was a bit thin and my back wasn't exactly happy about that. Free brekky was lovely and the free internet was not too crappy. The place has currency exchange at the lobby with good rates and even though they have all sorts of tours, they won't hound you about it, which is great.
This is also alright if traveling alone and you have no one to share expenses with since they have a dorm which is cheaper than booking a private room.
But if looking for really good value for just $15/night, try Madame Cuc's. They have 3 branches and we stayed at the one with the 184 address tucked away in a quiet alley in Pham Ngu Lao.

Hi
Stayed here for 3 nights at 13US$/ night, with AC and TV, in a very small room. We stayed at the sister hotel in a side alley off De Tham, The room was at the back, very quiet and clean enough to get a decent nights sleep. It has simple breakfast and internet access included, safe and clean, we were very comfortable, and the staff did their best to help with our requests.
We could have done more, but were really only passing through- good enough for me to go back there if in Saigon again.

Phan Lan Guesthouse
70 Bui Vien St, District 1, Saigon
This newish mini-hotel has reasonable-sized rooms that are very clean and well-furnished, though the mattresses are too soft for our taste. Little distinguishes this from any of the other nearby mini-hotels. The staff can be a little offhand but they were doing a roaring trade when we visited... more
Vinh Guest House
269 De Tham St, District 1, Saigon
Vinh Guesthouse is associated with the larger Le Le Hotel on Pham Ngu Lao St. This friendly guesthouse has good value rooms for the location, which while not brand-spanking new are clean and well positioned, particularly the rooms on the upper floors. The bathrooms are basic and cleanish, though... more
The Trinh
28/2 Do Quang Dao St, District 1, Saigon
The Trinh is set about half-way down Do Quang Dao and has immaculate, pastel-coloured rooms with brand new spotless bathrooms, TV and a choice or air-con or fan. The fan rooms are set on the corner of the building and have cute little verandas looking out over Do Quang Dao St. For the money and the... more
Hoang Linh Hotel
256 De Tham St, District 1, Saigon
Owner Mr Hoang has a seemingly endless supply of glowing recommendation books, and with his collection of 16 spotless rooms, it is easy to see why. The rooms are no-frills, with Ikea-style furnishings and super-soft mattresses, but they are very clean and well-looked after, and include TV, fridge... more
Hai Duong Hotel
82 Bui Vien St, District 1, Saigon
Set among the main row of mini-hotels on Bui Vien St, the Hai Duong has smaller (and cheaper) rooms facing onto the street and larger, quieter (and more expensive) rooms back off the street. The rooms are fairly well looked after but the bathrooms, while large, have aged. The rooms include air-con,... more
Huong Mini Hotel
Mini-hotel alley, 40/19 Bui Vien St, District 1, Saigon
The massive streetside rooms at Huong could easily sleep four, if not eight to a dozen in a squeeze. An added asset here is that the spacious verandas have not been totally given over to the air-con units, so there is ample space for yourself, a chair, a cold drink and a book. The furnishings are... more
Thai Nhi Mini Hotel
Mini-hotel alley, 40/4 Bui Vien St, District 1, Saigon
The walls are hardly scuffed at this smart and clean mini-hotel, which features baby blue and white trim throughout. The Thai Nhi has well-kitted out bathrooms complete with bathtub, but the balcony is minuscule -- barely large enough for a chair. This is a family-run and friendly... more
Hai Ha Hotel
76-78 Bui Vien St, District 1, Saigon
Hai Ha Hotel, like its neighbours, has standard issue, featureless, rooms with Ikea-style furniture that are more than adequate They've crimped a little on the bathrooms, which are more basic than the other places nearby. Despite this, rates are reasonable for both the street side and the quieter... more
Tram Anh
Mini-hotel-alley, 185/24 Pham Ngu Lao St, District 1, Saigon
Set towards the northern end of mini-hotel alley, the large verandas at this family-run mini-hotel are unfortunately taken up by two large and clunky air-con units, so don't plan on lounging around outside. The streetside rooms are very large, while the mid-priced ones are more modest. The cheapest... more
Phi Long
38 Bui Vien St, District 1
The rooms at Phi Long are backpacker standard and the hotel itself is in need of a paint job. The bathrooms are just okay, but they do include bathtubs -- one single has a huge corner bath. You pay more for a room with a balcony. The draw here is for internet addicts and laptop carriers --... more
Tan Mai Phai
Mini-hotel alley, 40/14 Bui Vien St, District 1
One word describes this place -- standard. Nothing jumps out about the rooms though nothing is particularly missing. Rooms include TV, air-con, fridge, telephone and have the all-important comfy mattress, though there are no balconies and the walls are screaming out for a coat of fresh paint. A... more
Vu Chau
37 Bui Vien St, District 1
Vu Chau is a plain guesthouse full of uninspiring rooms. They are dim and seem to be decorated in a horrible combination of pink and gray. The triple is not really a triple, unless Snow White has invited her friends to stay. All rooms have air-con, cable TV and fridge, but this is standard in the... more
