Thang Long Hotel
Rare downtown budget find

What we say:
A tall, narrow building located in Saigon's central business area, Thang Long Hotel is one of the few downtown hotels that accommodates travellers on a budget. Surrounded by many great restaurants and fine shopping, the location is what makes the hotel special. The exterior and decor here are plain; Thang Long is more of a functional affair. Rooms are well equipped with WiFi, mini-bar and cable TV. The slightly more expensive superior rooms are actually quite good, with the highest floor getting a view of the Saigon River. While the beds are on the firmer side, the internet connection is spotty, especially on odd numbered floors (the staff told us) and the cheapest rooms are windowless, Thang Long does have an exceptionally friendly staff and the location can't be beat for the price.

Overpriced
I stayed here back in 2002 and thought it was ok. This visit was disappointing though. We paid $37 for a double room, rather small and a bit dark. It had lots of extras like a kettle and hair dryer but no handy power points and anyway nothingbseemed to work. The top floor dining room was out of action and we had breakfast across the road. I also found the general area less attractive than it used to be with many of the old French buildings gone and a lot of building going on.

Ok place
We stayed in a front room with a small view of the Mekong. The room was clean, had good facilities and a kettle. Unfortunately the walk-in price was significantly cheaper than what we paid online - so beware. The restaurant upstairs was great with great views over breakfast. The staff were happy and offered alot of advice with no expectations of us booking anything. I did feel the narrow building sway slightly throughout the night and I was'nt drunk - see for yourself. Oh, and great location!

dodgy link
the link on this page is dodgy - it goes to ''Jenoe's model rocketry shop''... in Switzerland... unless that is a hotel as well?!

Hard to book and disappointing
This place is also in the Rough Guide, and is therefore hard to get in to. It's really disappointing when you do get in, as the rooms are pretty small and everyone staying there seems to smoke. In-room ADSL is actually WiFi with a router on even numbered floors, so poor signal if you are on an odd numbered floor. Much better deals to be found elsewhere - try just north of the Ben Thanh market, there are dozens of mid-range hotels with much nicer rooms in the same price range.
