Saigon is still quite thin when it comes to cheap dorm beds, but Saigon Youth Hostel fills this gap in the Pham Ngu Lao area.

It's tucked down a narrow alley also home to several tiny guesthouses, so the quarters are on the cramped side. Like most other budget spots in this area, it's a solid hike up a narrow stairwell to reach some of the rooms. Wood-framed bunk beds with clean sheets, towels and lockers are available in both mixed and women-only air-con rooms. Both are relatively tight, but the mixed room does have a balcony.

A couple of private rooms are basic and teeny -- best avoided if you're claustrophobic -- but they do come with fridges, air-con, TVs and cramped en suite bathrooms. If you go for a private, try to get the double as it has a small window.

Breakfast is included in all rates and common facilities include free WiFi, two communal computers and a small but cheery ground floor lounge/lobby with a foosball table. A well-meaning staff can't quite seem to handle the amount of guests usually here, so don't be too perturbed if you have to ask for something twice.
