Barbara's Kiwi Connection
The place to go

What we say:
Barbara's is the place to go, and most backpackers could do worse than just settle in here. You'll get an English-speaking staff, good food, meet everyone else who happens to be in town, and it's close to the beach. Also, the dorm beds are by far the cheapest sleeps in town. We sort of thought on our last visit, thought, that the 'antiquated charm' of the rooms had started to cross the line into 'just plain old.' And the staff, when Barbara isn't there, aren't very informative. There's an information book available to page through -- it's useful, but it's getting a little out of date and it somewhat oversells Qui Nhon's attractions. Still, we give it good marks since it's a great place to hang out, and the home-style western menu is one of the best, soul-satisfying bills of fare we've had in the whole country. The prices are right, too, so definitely head here for a meal.

Only if you absolutely have to...
We stayed here since there were no other rooms in town below $30 during reunification weekend. Barbara was helpful with tips on the surrounds and onward travel but the facilities were probably the worst we have experienced in all of SE Asia. Plus i wasn't impressed that after 4 nights accomodation, cumulative 10 meals between us, and booking 2 bus tickets through them, that they charged us to take a shower in the evening before our bus departure.... Food was pricey too - and bicycle / motorbike rental is double the price anywhere else in Vietnam...

Not impressed
I've got prface this review with the fact that I've never left a negative review and I even feel bad for doing so. But I feel obligated to post my experience: From my experience here, it's amazing the number of different ways they try and swindle money out you. If it's not short changing your bill, it's bringing you a slightly different, more expensive item than you ordered, which happened more than once. Barbara seems like a nice enough woman, but I can't help but wonder if she cultivates the..... shadiness. In my opinion, you shouldn't expect much more than a cheap dorm bed out of this place. You'll end up dissappointed if you do otherwise.

not the place to go!
19th of july 2009 I'd like to start with the prices: 6 beds dorm 50000 vnd (the dorm is very small for 6 with no air and only 1 small working fan, toilet in the room very very dirty) doble room with fan is 20 usD the local staff is very good when barbara is not around otherwise she just sent them to work in the kitchen. the information the you may required barbara won't tell you she will just lough and say impossible, like booking a minivan to get out of town to danang:and for the bus she would say: i could call but i'm sure it's full(not very helpfull at all) about the restaurant: very expensive and very small portions barbara main consern is the restaurant so if you are staiyng in the dorm don't be surprise to be ask to leave a chair free so people having dinner can seat and if you do keep the seat you have to buy something... for me it's not an old style hostel like lonely planet would say, because if you can't seat in the room because of the heat where can you???

Disorganised and unapologetic
We had an awful time with our stay at Barbaras. Admittedly we arrived at 1.30 am, but had told them we would as the buses usually drop off all long haul bus visitors around this time. However when we arrived our reserved room was unavailable (it even stated on our booking slip that room may be unavailable, written when they took the booking). Instead we were shoved into a dorm room, when we questioned this they knocked on another door, woke up one of the staff and shut us in her stinky room with a window looking onto a wall. The next day they tried to charge us for the seaview room and when we complained Barbara said we should have just taken the dorm. The beach it overlooks is littered with rubbish and unswimmable. We rented a bike from Barbaras to explore the better beaches and on our return at dusk we discovered one bike had no headlight an the other no backlight. Thouroughly unimpressed by the whole experience. There is a much nicer and cheaper hotel just around the corner from Barbaras, can't remember the name but Barbaras staff recommended it to us. Just go to Barbaras for the food, it is OK.
