Ba Tu
Excellent backpacker option

What we say:
Unlike the ubiquitous tall Vietnamese style buildings that most hotels are housed in, Ba Tu sits in a beautiful old house. A wooden staircase winds up through the centre leading to floors decorated in chessboard tiles, black and white throughout. Although the rooms are basic, a certain charm flows from them that is lacking in other unimaginative budget hotels -- for example, the bathrooms is thoughtfully adorned with a selection of fresh flowers. Even though the beds are soft and some rooms don't have a window, something about Ba Tu means it is usually full, so calling ahead is probably advisable.

good value but loud and empty
when I arrived at about 6.45 am, everybody was asleep in the lobby, then one guy woke up and showed me two rooms - they only have really huge family rooms with two big beds, enough space for four people. I took a room for 150.000 which had bathroom, tv, ac, balcony and was spotless and really big. facing the street though, so really loud, but by that time I already was used to that. the other room was on the backside, not facing the streeet but a construction site. prefer street noise. all in all, it is good value for money, nice room and very good location close to all shops, restaurants, bars and the beach. what was kind of strange is that the rest of the place seemed to be empty, except one room next to mine, where a girl stayed who was apparantly somehow attached to the family owning the place. in the last night, she came home at about 4am quite drunk (judging from her voice) which caused big trouble and a huge, loud and long fight between at least three people, which I had the chance to listen too. should have got up and go complain but was too lazy. so good value for money, don't expect any extra cosy atmosphere - although it is nice not to be bothered with tour- and tripselling for a change :)

Price Higher and Dirty Linens
Price was 600,000/night for the unification holiday in April. I am a teacher in Vietnam and couldn't even get my Vietnamese friends to convince them to lower the price. This was to be expected as it is the norm. However there were no fresh flowers in the bathroom, only a used comb and razor. Also, the bed sheets were not clean at all, complete with other people's hair and fresh make-up (not stains!!). It was alright, would stay there again if I HAD to, but not by choice.
