Phong Lan Hotel

A bit, well, strange

What we say: 3 stars

We found some pretty odd and surprising places on our visit to Ninh Chu beach, and this is one of the oddest. It's set well-off the beach, which seems a bit silly, and the grounds are designed like some kind of Italian palazzo, with foot-bridges crossing a lily-covered pond, converging on a gazebo housing a restaurant in the centre. Around this are five or six buildings, in the same Romanesque design, in clashing pastel colours, containing 150 rooms, overlooking the pool and tennis court -- and the caged monkeys. It seems as ill-conceived as it is strangely pretty. And slightly creepy. The rooms themselves are all two-room suites -- sort of spare, with hard, heavy furnishings, and some pretty unimaginative decor. The place was nearly empty on our visit, though things may pick up from June through August and on Vietnamese Holidays. A bit like the Hoan Cau down the road, it's a good place to stay if you just want something to write home about. At the price, it's a decent value for the experience. Less than two tickets to a David Lynch movie and a tub of popcorn.
