While you on a roll reviewing places to eat in Bali, go check out Waroeng Tan Poh (aka Under the Mango Tree) in Legian. Yeah, I know, why would you want to go to Legian? Well, on my last trip through Bali, I returned to Legian, fighting all repulsion, just to go back to this restaurant. It's in a small alley off Jalan Legian, and the are lots of tables outside... under the mango tree! You can even forgive the flow of motorbikes that goes by.

Great ambience, great food, good prices, friendly staff, free WiFi. The only drawback for me is that introduced live music which I find a bit loud and a bit cheesy. Just go early enough to avoid it if it's not your thing.

Accommodation is generally quite basic with most places in people's houses but there are more upmarket places with aircon and western toilet as well -- but they are still quite budget. Then there are a few quite expensive places that get hardly any guests and to be honest look a bit crappy due to lack of customers. The best trickier to just arrive and try and find a place. It's pretty easy to do.

@Tara - I don't know for sure, but I can say with 99% confidence that no angkot goes from the airport to there. In fact, from the airport, it would be around 4 angkots, I'd say. The problem is that most angkots end up in Denpasar and there are multiple terminals in Denpasar requiring trips across town etc. Just catch a cab and save youself a few hours. :)

Thanks for the great write up! It was a pleasure meeting you and Nicky and I had a great time going out there. As you said in the article, I would of course be willing to take anyone who is dedicated enough to follow me out there. The best way for anyone who wants to go would be to contact me directly through my site at www.BaliManual.com

Thanks again, seeing those pictures makes me wish I was back there right now!

It's funny that as tourists, I mean travellers, we don't like places that are too touristy yet, those places that usually are(touristy)..need to be seen. Bali has some places like Kuta that I agree are designed for tourists and perhaps lost some of that authenticity yet Ubud is still very unique and beautiful. We loved our stay, the amazing landscapes, the performances, the art and certainly the people. They are truly amazing. Mind you, we had enough of some of the street vendors and temple guides who just don't understand 'no', but regardless Bali remains of those unique places that many travellers just must see during their Asia travels.

Sam,
Are you still in Bali? As I stated in the article it has been asked that I do not publicly post the address, but I will take you out there if you want to try it. I took a group of 17 people out there this past Thursday and every single person not only said that it was the best Babi Guling they had ever had but also the entire experience was simply incredible. One of my friends took a video of it and it is in the editing stages rot now, I will post it up once it is complete.

They got me in Kuta recently, managing to rip me off an impressive 200,000 rupiah on a AU $200 transaction. Two guys behind the desk and their main angle was to deliberately miscalculate the exchange rate by just 10,000 and then, with the money on the table, to offer me their calculator to correct their mistake for them (the perfect distraction). Profuse apologies followed as the missing 10,000 was added. I did my best to stare at the cash the whole time, and I recounted the money, but it was in four piles which i foolishly counted one-by one. All seeming to be in order i gathered up the 4 piles and left. Ha! Of course they'd managed to slip out 4x 50,000 notes in all the confusion.
So i broke 5 rules: i used a dodgy shop-based changer (in kuta!), fell for the better-than-most rate, allowed myself to be outnumbered 4 hands to 2 AND to be distracted during the transaction and DIDN'T HOLD ALL THE MONEY IN MY HANDS AT ONCE when doing the final count. Valuable lesson though, the original miscount of the rate, the smiles and apologies...it was all about distraction. Well done guys, multiple tricks work better than one.
In my defense i was in a real hurry - mistake number 6 i guess :p

I recently went to Pak Malen in Seminyak for my first taste of this famous dish. There were a lot of locals and we were one of two tables of tourists, a taxi driver showed us where it was. It was around 350000 last month, they may have charged us more but definitely worth the conversion of about $3.50. I really enjoyed their home-made sambal which had lemongrass and was super bagus hot!!
