Where do you go for a great meal in a lovely setting in Sihanoukville? The short answer is, “Lots of places,” but if you add, “when you’re on a budget” to that question, it narrows the field substantially. While not the cheapest restaurant in Sihanoukville, the restaurant at the New Sea View Villa Guesthouse, near the bottom of Serendipity Beach Road, is good value at any time and if you time your evening meal right, it’s a gourmet bargain.
If you happen to be passing by as the sun goes down and you’re feeling a little peckish, it’s hard to resist this restaurant. The one thing that may put you off is that from the outside, it looks like it may be expensive. Look a little more closely, though, and you might notice a sign advertising a “2+2=$10″ special. What that means is that if you sit down for supper between the hours of 17:00 and 19:00, you can get two entrees and two main courses for $10.
The entire menu is not available at this price, but the selections offered are definitely not picked from the bottom of the barrel. For entrees, try the tapenade bruschetta and tomato, mozzarella and basil salad. Don’t do as we did and have the same combination twice, though. All of the entrees are delicious, some of them absurdly so, and the basket of fresh bread that accompanies them helps make up for the small portions of some, like the baked scallops.
For a “specials” menu, the main courses offered at New Sea View Villa are remarkably diverse. There’s everything from vegetarian dishes to steak to choose from and all of them are well presented and delicious. If you’re really hungry, we recommend the beef or vegetarian lasagne, which comes piping hot in a crockpot topped with a thick layer of mozzarella cheese.
Although it’s conceivable that two of you can get in and out of the restaurant for only $10, that’s not likely to happen. The list of $3 cocktails on one blackboard menu will catch your eye while you wait for your entree and before you finish your main course, you’ll be contemplating the $2.50 dessert blackboard menu, which includes favourites like creme brulee and tiramisu as well as more mundane but equally delicious desserts like carrot cake and cheesecake.
Let’s say you skip dessert, only to regret the decision later. Come back the next day between 12:00 and 16:00 and make amends with the $2.50 cake and coffee special.
Of course, the prices listed here are current as of this writing only and are not guaranteed to last. However, the New Sea View Villa built its reputation on value for money and it’s a good bet they won’t be changing their policy any time soon, especially since so many other equally good restaurants have opened up in Sihanoukville. Anyway, check it out next time you take a walk down Serendipity Road.
