Review: Betelnut Cafe, Bali

Published by at 4:26 am under Food

It can be a challenge to find a cafe or restaurant in Bali combining healthy food with delicious Balinese flavours, but Betelnut Cafe, in Bali’s Canggu on the way to Echo beach, does an excellent job of doing precisely this, in colourful, relaxed surrounds.

Settle in, why doncha!

Well worth seeking out for a meal, the eclectic cafe focuses on breakfast, burgers, wraps, salad bowls, raw food, and Mexican, with a few other starters, mains plus desserts as well. The focus here is on light and healthy cuisine, with plenty of robust flavour. The range of drinks is also brilliant, with a great choice of smoothies — dragonfruit, strawberry, dates and milk sounds pretty interesting to us — juices, frappes, Dharma teas and coffees.

Check out the board for the daily salads and order a few for a satisfying but healthy meal. We had the red rice with shallots and coconut dressing, lawar (bloodless!) comprising beans, shredded coconut and crispy shallots, and a green salad with cherry tomatoes and cashews (40,000 rupiah or 50,000 for four selections). It was divine.

Sturdier offerings include for instance flour tortillas with red rice, beans, cheese, salsa and guacamole for 35,000 rupiah, or a chicken betutu burger — now that’s fusion! The burger includes betutu chicken with greens and a sambal relish (45,00 rupiah). We’re definitely trying the latter on our next visit.

Just yum.

Heading here for breakfast before or after a surf down at Echo beach means you can choose from options such as scrambled tofu with spinach, mushroom and roasted tomato or scrambled eggs, avocado, feta and salsa wrapped in a tortilla. Actually, we think they’ll serve you even if you’re not a surfer — but this is a popular surfer joint. Is it worth going out of your way for? If you’re staying in the Canggu area, we’d definitely make the effort to get here; if you’re staying in Seminyak and heading to Echo beach anyway, this would probably be our pick for a meal in the area.

Sit downstairs in the comfortable air-conditioned room, or head upstairs where it’s open-air and you have better views of the surrounding paddy. You can see across to Deus, another good dining option in the area — though if we had to choose, Betelnut has the edge for healthy fare.

It’s a shack! With air-con downstairs.
