Bali can be really beautiful when it wants to be. While in heavily touristed Ubud and the southern beaches, a room with a view has become an expensive room with a view, but off in Munduk in Bali’s central heartland, the views are still delivered free of charge just for making the effort to visit — regardless of your budget.
The picture above is from an earlier trip to Munduk and was taken from the rooftop restaurant at Puri Alam (from 300,000 rupiah) during the sunny, slightly warm and totally beautiful season (also known as June, July and August). We thought we’d slot this in above all the rest which were taken in a misty, temperamental and moody February.
So let’s start with the cheapest view in town: Number One Guesthouse. Only two rooms and the fancy one goes for a sweet 80,000 rupiah. The southward views are thrown in for free.

With only two rooms, Number One fills up fast, which is a boon for Taman Ayu Homestay on the north side of the ridge. With a wink and a smile you should be able to settle in here for 100,000 rupiah. This was our favourite budget hideaway in Munduk.
If you’re wanting something a little more upmarket but want to stay central and keep the plastic in the wallet, Puri Sunny (from 300,000 rupiah) is a solid option and, as you can see, the views are just awful.
But then if you really want to wear down that corporate card, Puri Lumbung (from US$79++) offers a great combination of rice field and northern valley views. When we asked the staffer who was the primary clientele (meaning nationality) she replied “lovers”. We can see that.
Then, not everyone wants it all laid out before them. Meme Surung (from 150,000 rupiah) has some charming colonial rooms for rent, but the best views are from the cheapies out back. Catch a glimpse between the leaves.

Think Puri Lumbung at less than half the price and you’re at Manah Liang (from 350,000 rupiah). With lovely views, being kid friendly and having decidedly laid back staff, it’s a shame it’s such a walk from town, but at least you’ve got a comfy chair to recover in.
Melanting (from 400,000 rupiah) is last cab off the rank when it comes to being within walking distance into Munduk, and while the staffer was forever apologising about the views, they’re great. The above is apparently “one of the worst”.
Putting aside the curvature of the Earth, if you look really hard, on a super clear day, with your Superman glasses on, you could probably see Saigon from Munduk Sari Garden Villa (from 300,000 rupiah). They’ve actually got two properties, both with fab views.
So there you go: a few places to rest your heels and enjoy the views after checking out a few of Munduk’s wonderful waterfalls.
