When you enter the new showroom for Dao Siam Cosmetics in Ko Samui's Choeng Mon you'll suffer in the best way possible: from olfactory overload, as scents of predominantly citronella with undertones of white orchid and Thai herbs waft through the air.
Aromdee Asia has been supplying hotels and spas in Thailand for several years, and recently decided to sell to the public under the Dao Siam label. The products are made on site, in a small laboratory in full view of the shop. Customers can see their body products being made, watching the ingredients being blended together before taking them home.
The range of products includes potions for the face -- masks, gentle scrubs, cleansers, toners and moisturisers, plus goodies for the shower -- shower gel, shampoo and conditioner -- and massage and essential oils, body wraps and body scrubs form the spa treatment range.
Walking towards the shelf with the scrubs, you may get a distinct urge to go for a coffee and a cake, as your nose twitches from the aroma of scrubs with fragrances or rather flavours such as chocolate, coffee, coconut, lychee and mango, pineapple and mango, mangosteen as well as tamarind. The tester of the thick and creamy chocolate scrub seemed good enough to spread on a pancake with chopped banana, and the coffee scrub would satisfy the most ardent of caffeine addicts.
Those opposed to DEET, will appreciate the pleasant lemongrass scent of the all natural mosquito repellent. The aloe vera gel is well priced at 180 baht, and is not sticky at all, perfect for after a day on one of Thailand's beaches.
Dao Siam has their version of green balm, a staple item in most Thai ladies’ handbags. Similar to Tiger Balm, it is used for everything from headache relief to massaging sore muscles. Dab a blob on your wrists, rub together and inhale for an instant pick-me-up.
Dao Siam claims to sell only natural products, free of paraffin, palm oil and parabens, and are not tested on animals. Prices although not cheap, are reasonable. A 200-gram tub of body scrub costs 460 baht, while 150ml of aloe vera gel is 180 baht.
