June 21 marks World Music Day, an event which originated in France 30 years ago as a celebration of the summer solstice (the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere). Also known as the Fete de la Musique, it now spans more than 100 countries round the world, including Malaysia. Thanks to the Alliance Francaise, three free musical events are to take place in Kuala Lumpur to mark the occasion.
On the big night itself is a concert by French rock band Merzhin at the Black Box, in Map @ Publika. Merzhin draw on their background in the Brittany region of France to form a distinctive sound, which combines traditional and conventional instruments. The concert, the band’s first in Malaysia, kicks off at 20:30.
For something altogether different, the Alliance Francaise will be hosting a karaoke evening, on June 19 at its main KL centre. The event will feature a selection of French and international songs. It start at 18:00. To reserve tickets for both events, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
For a more local take on World Music Day, Palate Palette will be the venue for a 12-hour musical extravaganza. Getting underway at 15:00 on June 18, the fun will continue until 03:00 on June 19. Let’s hope the neighbours are fans of live music. The performers include Doppelganger and The Metaphor. The event also has an open mic section to give budding musicians the opportunity to take part. As well as free admission, punters can take advantage of Palate’s happy hour, which runs from 12:00 until 20:00.
Even if you cannot make any of the specific World Music Day events, late June offers other opportunities to see music for free. No Black Tie is hosting two performances by Isaac Entry, a KL-born musician, on June 20 and 27 at 21:30. His style draws on various genres, including reggae, blues, soul and contemporary folk. Isaac is also performing free at Alexis Bistro (Ampang) on June 24 and 25 at 22:00.
Other places with regular free gigs include Nerofico, an Italian restaurant and live jazz venue in Damansara Heights; the Suria KLCC branch of the Malones Irish pub chain; and the tapas bar and venue, La Bodega Lounge.
