Review: Sagar, Kuala Lumpur

Published by at 4:18 am under Food

South Indian restaurants are far more the norm in Kuala Lumpur, but flamboyant Sagar in Bangsar, a 15-minute cab ride from the city centre, offers a wide selection of northern Indian specialties, such as tandoori chicken, rogan gosh and chicken biryani. Vegetarians aren’t forgotten either, with a long list of dishes that’ll suit even the most hardcore vegan’s palate.

It may not look it, but the palak paneer steals the show.

The decoration is heavy and elaborate, so you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve walked into a Maharaja’s ostentatious palace. From an ornate swing as you enter to the chandeliers, Sagar’s decor borders on extravagant, but the ambiance is endearing — after all, most good north Indian restaurants seem to go hand in hand with slightly over the top decor.

The food here is as colourful as the setting.

With reasonable prices (ranging from 9 to 14 ringgit) and friendly staff, it’s not hard to indulge in a sumptuous meal. Try the palak paneer (grinded spinach with cottage cheese), tawa pindi (okra stuffed with spices on a hot plate) or butter chicken; and an absolute must for dessert is the pista kulfi (Indian pistachio ice cream). If you’d like to try some Indian beer go for a Kingfisher but wine (on average 20 ringgit per glass) and cocktails can easily be conjured up too. Dining here will set you back between an affordable 30 and 37 ringgit, which would include non-alcoholic drinks and two main dishes.

While the venue is large in size, it’s still a quiet place where you can enjoy authentic northern Indian food with fellow travellers, though most of the clientele is local. Securing a table is fairly stress free, with plenty of seats in the two dining rooms. If you’re driving, parking is limited — you’ll find a few spaces at the front of the converted bungalow but chances are you’ll have to find a spot somewhere else.

If you’re in the area but you’re not in the mood for Indian food, F Concepts by Buffalo Kitchens serves affordable Western dishes nearby on Jalan Telawi. For simple but well executed Thai food, head to Lanna Amazing Thai Cuisine, also located in Bangsar, while Rebung is just down the road.
