Review: Sheela’s Restaurant and Cafe

Published by at 8:38 am under Pantai Tengah

If in Langkawi some of your party wants to try local Malay cuisine and others are wanting a taste of the West, Sheela’s Restaurant and Cafe is a good spot to try in Pantai Tengah. The atmosphere alone is worth it just to sit and have a beer, because it’s truly a little garden paradise. Its quiet outdoor seating area is set within amazing foliage, tended daily by the owner Sheela and her green thumb. Tiny lights woven through the trees set the scene for romance, contemplation, or simply a relaxed evening with family or friends.

The beacon in the dark.

Although Sheela’s has a sign on the main road in Pantai Tengah, the entrance is a bit like a doorway in Alice and Wonderland or a shrub tunnel to be more precise. Located directly across from Holiday Villa Resort and just past Zackry Guest House, you can’t miss it. (And if you’re staying at Zackry Guest House you get a 15 percent discount).

You won’t hear any blaring disco music and you may or may not see any other customers, but once you’ve taken a seat waitstaff or the owners themselves will greet you almost instantaneously. You can choose whether to dine among the lit garden foliage or inside surrounded by the original artwork of Sheela’s friends.

A touch of garden magic.

You have a wide variety to choose from in regards to Malay or Western cuisine, but not so much that you stare at the menu wanting simplicity. The husband and wife proprietors pride their business on honouring both their countries, Malaysia and Germany, 50-50. Malay cuisine in general seems to have such variations, depending on the venue, so we opted for our first Sheela’s meal to be Malay.

The Langkawi Special is a traditionally-based delicious mix of vegetables and your choice of meat (or no meat if you’re a vegetarian) spiced with turmeric, ginger and lemongrass. Adding a side order of rice, this simple meal is easily enough for two people because of its generous serving size. Add a couple of beers  (not listed in the beverage selection but ask) and my bill was 40 ringgit (after 10 percent ‘local’ discount).

Malay or Western is done well here.

Because Sheela’s is family run and operated, either Sheela or her husband Willy are always there to greet guests, answer Langkawi questions or just chat. They will however close the entrance gate if the restaurant gets too busy to ensure this level of customer service. So we advise making a reservation, especially during the busy season.
