Langkawi’s dining options have expanded over the past few years and 3 Amigos is one example of what’s been added to the changing scene. Though Langkawi is as about as far from Mexico as you can get, we were impressed with the quality and value of the cuisine at this local cantina at Pantai Cenang.
3 Amigos creatively shares a kitchen with the adjacent older and more established Viva Italia restaurant; perhaps an odd combination, but it works. The saloon-style doors take you into the open-air dining area with ceiling fans and heavy wooden chairs set around tables covered with festive red checked cloths — all that’s missing is the mariachi band.
The menu has many Mexican specialties that you don’t easily find outside of Mexico, especially Southeast Asia. Pico de gallo, chiliqueles and fish tacos all caught our eye; although nothing on the menu is exactly a direct translation from its Mexican counterpart – a bit of a local twist on the traditional ingredients occurs — the freshness and zesty flavours are quite tasty. The authentic-style tomato salsa is made fresh from scratch, and salsa is usually a sure fire test for any Mexican restaurant. The guacamole is a bit weak but still good and they serve their dishes with a small side of sour cream. Try starting with a hearty order of traditional nachos for either an appetiser or a light meal for 21 ringgit.
The large selection of fajitas from beef ,chicken or shrimp start at just 26 ringgit. Also the array of tacos, quesadillas and burritos available is just as impressive and should please just about anyone, especially starting at just 21 ringgit. The mains include a traditional snapper vera cruz that is very close to the original dish from coastal Mexico.
Our favourite though is the fish tacos, served on flour tortillas with sides of salsa, guacamole and sour cream — two of these large tacos for 26 ringgit is a bargain.
The waitstaff at times may need to be encouraged a bit, but a wave of the hand will have them at your table pronto and your food will come out hot and in short order. The juices are also a must try as they’re made fresh to order, and if you’re a die-hard traditionalist they serve ice cold Corona beer as well.
