UPDATE: Clinic Bar has closed.
Make yourself comfy in a gold-plated wheelchair and order up an IV bag of booze at Singapore’s hospital-themed Clinic Bar. Located in the trendy Clarke Quay area, the bar creates a morbidly chic atmosphere with shots served in syringes, servers wearing scrubs, and hospital bed couches.
Clinic Bar is the kind of place you go for the experience rather than the drinks, and the signature cocktails don’t live up to their high price tags. “Sex on the Drip” and “Blood Transfusion” are served in IV bags and, at S$50 a pop, you’d think would contain a healthy dose of alcohol, but taste like a double at best. The specialty shots, priced at S$50 for six, at least feel like a better deal and come in syringes or test tubes. A round of “The Doctor’s Order” is a memorable way to kick off the night and served in a toy doctor’s kit that you can keep as a souvenir.
For the same ambience with a smaller bar bill, check in to the Clinic between 18:00 and 21:00 for happy hour specials like S$20 pitchers of Tiger Beer and buy-one-get-one-free spirits. Standard drinks are served in plain glasses and the bar has the annoying practice of serving both drinks (the paid one and the freebie) at the same time. Order the same drink as someone else at your table or be prepared for some double-fisted drinking.
While The Clinic continues to catch the attention of passersby who take photos in the creepy leopard-print dentist chair but don’t actually order anything, the regular Clarke Quay party crowd has lost interest and the bar has down-sized in recent years. What was once the second floor is now Lunar Asian Fusion Bar and there isn’t much more to Clinic than the al fresco seating. You should have no problem getting a table.
