Strain your brain at a Singapore pub quiz

Published by at 9:48 am under Bars & nightlife

Don’t let your brain turn to mush while you travel – flex those neurons at one of Singapore’s pub quizzes. By my count five bars reliably host a weekday trivia night with prizes and a drink special to accompany it.

By the very British nature of pub quizzes there tends to be a UK-leaning to many of the questions – especially when it comes to sports. If you’re like me and know absolutely nothing about Premier League football or cricket you may want to recruit a Brit to join your team if you hope to win.

Bring your brains then drown them in beer!

Here’s a rundown of bars in Singapore with regular pub quizzes:

Brewerkz Riverside Point: Every Tuesday at 20:00 is trivia night at this microbrewery at Clarke Quay. There’s an entry fee of S$5 per person and the winning team takes it all – the prize pool can reach a few hundred dollars. Second place gets restaurant vouchers to pay for their food and drink tab, third place gets of 6-pack of Brewerkz beer, and a consolation prize of a mini-keg goes to a team of the quiz master’s choosing (usually a small team that fared well). Brewerkz draws the biggest crowd of any pub quiz, possibly because participation locks in the happy hour price of S$9 a pint!

Turn:styles: The Tuesday night quiz at this expat sports bar near Boat Quay always attracts a full house – book your table at least a day in advance. The quiz goes for six rounds with the usual categories like sports and music and there’s no entry fee. The winning team gets free drinks and happy hour drink specials are extended for a few hours past the quiz’s 20:00 starting time.

Boomarang Bistro: A little further down the river at Robertson Quay, this Aussie eatery also does a Tuesday night pub quiz. It’s free to play and the winning team gets their bar tab on the house. Registration starts around 19:30 and the drink special is pints of Pure Blonde or Victoria Bitters from S$10.

The Dog & Bone: The Tuesday night quiz at this British pub on the East Coast draws a small but loyal crowd. The entry fee is S$5 per person and the winning team takes the cash. There isn’t a drink special on quiz night, but drink prices are already pretty reasonable at S$9 for a mixed drink or S$23 for a jug of San Miguel beer. The quiz starts around 20:30 every second Tuesday (upcoming quizzes are June 21, July 5 and 19, August 2, 16, and 30, and so on).

The Old Brown Shoe: This British pub breaks the trend by holding its quiz night on Wednesday. The price is S$5 per person and it starts around 20:00. The winning team takes the money while second place getters can drown their sorrows in some free booze. There’s a good selection of imported beers and the kitchen makes one of the better fish & chips in Singapore (it’s even wrapped in newspaper).

Though these quizzes are reliable events, occasionally the quizmaster takes a week or two off. It’s advisable to call the bar to confirm that the quiz is on and book your table.

We made bucks at Brewerkz on our last trip to Singapore. It paid for the night and much more. We went there with friends and the place teamed us up with some clever quiz-junkie Singaporean guys. We took home first prize and split the profits. Fun times :) Definitely recommended!

We’ve been going to the Quiz Night at Krish recently – 9 Rochester Park, just beyond the parking lots. It’s on every Wednesday from about 8pm and is hosted by an Irish giant. There isn’t any entry fee, and the prizes range from bar vouchers to bottles of wine, champagne etc. for the runners up. The bar also keeps track of your score for you because top teams on the leaderboard get more prizes. Good turnout! Recommend calling ahead to reserve a table though.

Hi Joyce – I’ve been going to the quiz at Krish, too. I’m on team “Donkey Nog” – what team do you play with? I’ve added Krish to the quiz list, too! :)
