With Singapore commonly described as clean, safe, and modern, it’s no wonder the city-state is a popular choice for family holidays. In a previous post I discussed family-friendly attractions like the Botanic Gardens, Singapore Zoo, and Science Centre. This post will cover Sentosa, Singapore’s island playground, which is bursting at the seams with fun places to take your kids.

There’s more to Sentosa than the Merlion.

Opened in 2010, Universal Studios Singapore is the most impressive theme park in Southeast Asia. There are nearly 20 rides featuring favourite movie characters like Shrek, the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, and the Transformers. Except for a few scream-inducing rollercoasters, most of the attractions are suitable for children six and up. Expect to spend a lot of time queuing for the best rides, so wear light clothes and drink lots of water! A one-day pass costs S$68 for adults and S$50 for children aged four to 12.

For an adrenaline rush for less, try the Skyline Luge ride at Imbiah Lookout. First you take a chair-lift to the top of a hill (just like when you go skiing), then get into a luge cart which you ride downhill. The luge carts are very simple to control and you can go as fast or slow as you like. Everyone must wear a helmet and children under the age of six can ride with their parents. One ride costs S$12.50 per person or you can get a family pass for two adults and two children for S$32.

If your kids are animal lovers, a visit to Underwater World Sentosa should be on the itinerary. For a small aquarium it features lots of amazing animals including sharks, seahorses, jellyfish, and sea turtles plus a performance by the cute pink dolphins. Don’t miss the touch pool where you can “pet” starfish and harmless sting rays. Admission is S$25.90 for adults and S$17.60 for children age three to 12.

Of course, you don’t have to spend a small fortune to enjoy Sentosa Island. Palawan Beach is an ideal place for families to spend a hot Singapore afternoon and has soft sand for building sandcastles, a playground, and even a lifeguard on duty. Just as important, there are excellent changing rooms and an affordable foodcourt right on the beach. There are also free “Animal Encounter” shows every afternoon at the Palawan Amphitheatre featuring parrots and pythons.
