Dec 21 2012
Singapore may be the most straight-laced city in Southeast Asia, but it makes a memorable place to ring in the new year. Here’s a wrap-up of the best New Year’s Eve 2012 events in Singapore from spectacular fireworks at Marina Bay to all-night beach parties on Sentosa Island.
If you want to ring in 2013 with half of Singapore, the place to be is Marina Bay. The waterfront makes a spectacular backdrop for the spectacular fireworks display which starts at the stroke of midnight and will light up the sky for a full eight minutes. Come early to score a good viewing spot and check out the family-friendly New Year’s Eve activities including free concerts, dancing, food stalls and a “wishing spheres” art installation with people’s dreams for 2013. If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, you can watch the show live on Channel News Asia. Find a full schedule of events on the Marina Bay Countdown website.
Singapore’s entertainment zone of Clarke Quay is also going all out with an “Around the World” New Year’s Eve party — expect everything from a Japanese DJ to Middle Eastern belly dancers and Chinese parade characters. Admission is free and there are dozens of bars where you can get a drink to toast 2013. Festivities start around 22:00 and go as long as you can stay awake.
We question the combination of alcohol and roller coasters, but Universal Studios Singapore is also having a New Year’s Eve countdown party. The movie-themed rides will be running until midnight plus there will be fireworks and a Lady Gaga tribute artist. Admission is S$68 per person plus an additional S$14 for unlimited drinks from 17:00 till 01:00 – a good deal if ever we heard one. You can buy your tickets through the Resorts World Sentosa website.
Another option for celebrating 2013 on Sentosa is the Siloso Beach Party. This strictly 18+ event turns the beach into an outdoor dance floor complete with top DJs, fringe performers, a foam pool and, of course, a pyrotechnics show at midnight. The ticket price of S$52 includes one drink plus entry to four of Sentosa’s best beach bars each with their own entertainment. The party starts at 18:00 and goes all night until 06:00. Buy tickets online, at Sentosa ticketing counters or at selected MRT stations.
Most Singapore night clubs will also be having their own New Year’s Eve parties. Our top pick is the “Studio One Disco Party” at rooftop 1-Altitude Bar, which is also an ideal vantage point for watching the fireworks. If you arrive before midnight, the cover charge is a staggering S$180 per person but does include unlimited drinks (at a regular price of S$20+ per drink, it’s a good deal for Singapore!). Other clubs that will be hopping include Home Club, Zouk and Attica.
For something completely different, try the New Year’s Eve party at the Asian Civilizations Museum. Admission to the museum will be free (usually S$8) and you can browse the exhibits until 01:00.
