Singapore’s Hotel Re! may look like any of the other apartment buildings in the old public housing area it’s located in, but the fluorescent pink and yellow of its exterior suggest rather brightly that this building is something more than just ordinary flats.
Once inside, this retro-themed, 12-storey, 140-room hotel envelops guests in swirls of colours and psychedelic globular designs. Each floor has its own colour theme, which extends to the rooms. It’s hard to imagine that this was formerly a primary school…
Rooms are compact but feature quirky, fun decor. Amenities include WiFi, coffee- and tea-making facilities, LCD TV with satellite feed, and access to a gym. Deluxe rooms, the most affordable of the Hotel Re’s six tiers of rooms, start from S$178, plonking the hotel firmly into top-range category by our reckoning. Premier rooms are slightly bigger and offer a rainshower; go up another notch to executive and business rooms for added comforts such as a Posturepedic bed, better pillows, iPod docks, Nespresso machines and a bidet.
The hotel’s restaurant, named of course Re!fill, serves a buffet breakfast daily; an alfresco wine bar, Re!Wine, serves drinks from 17:00 till midnight, but happy hour is from 17:00 till 20:00. Be warned that the hotel is totally non-smoking.
Family and themed suites have separate bedrooms but get rather pricey at around S$500-600; check Hotel Re!’s website for its various promotions to snare a better rate.
If you’re after something a little cheaper but style’s still important, perhaps try Porcelain Hotel instead.
Situated at the base of Pearl’s Hill along Chin Swee Road, you’re a 15-minute walk amid greenery to Singapore’s Chinatown or a 20-minute saunter to the Quays watering hole area. The hotel offers a one-way shuttle service to Outram MRT, which is a shorter walk to Chinatown and a few train stops away from the civic district and Orchard Road shopping district.
Hotel Re! is re-assuringly re-freshing… we re-ally do like the design, so if it falls within your budget, it’s worth considering.
