There’s no denying that Singapore is an expensive city, which is why I try to regularly write posts with the potential to save Travelfishers some money. I’ve recently covered budget places to stay like Singapore’s cheapest hostels and family rooms under S$120, and now I turn my focus to the city’s diverse and world-class museums. … read the full post

Christmas in Singapore
First published: 12 Dec 2011
Don’t be fooled by the balmy climate and the non-Christian majority: Singapore goes crazy for Christmas. Like festive celebrations in Kuala Lumpur, Christmas time in Singapore is largely a secular event that takes place not at home but in malls and restaurants around the city. Singapore’s “Christmas in the Tropics” events are full swing now … read the full post

Family rooms from S$120-250 in Singapore
First published: 07 Dec 2011
Last month I wrote about family rooms under S$120, but in Singapore’s over-priced hotel market this gets you little more than four walls and two beds. Small luxuries like 24-hour air-con and your own bathroom can be indispensable when travelling Southeast Asia with children, but for these comforts you need to venture into mid-range accommodation. … read the full post

Elephant Parade stampedes into Singapore
First published: 21 Nov 2011
Keep an eye out for elephants on the footpaths of Singapore over the next few months. No, Singapore hasn’t morphed into a mahout camp – the Elephant Parade open-air art exhibit is in town until January 2012. The Elephant Parade was created to raise awareness (and money) to save the Asian elephant from extinction. Each … read the full post

Singapore’s Mint Museum of Toys
First published: 16 Nov 2011
When you were a kid, how did you treat your toys? Did you tear into a new toy and play until it broke, or were you the type who kept your favourites in mint condition with the original box? The Founder of the Mint Museum, Singaporean Chang Yang Fa, was definitely the latter and his … read the full post

Welcome to Singapore! Depending what country you’re from, tourists are issued a visa-on-arrival which is valid for 30 to 90 days. This is more than enough time to see the sights, but if you need to extend your visa it couldn’t be easier. In fact, you don’t even need to get up from the computer … read the full post

First published: 10 Nov 2011
Forget chilli crab — if Singapore has a national dish it’s definitely chicken rice. First of all, this simple but tasty dish is something that Singaporeans genuinely eat all the time. No hawker centre is complete without a chicken rice stall and it’s a balanced meal – carbs, protein, chilli sauce – for just a … read the full post
