When passing through this megapolis, people often seem to be in search of the typical Bangkok experience. While sites like Wat Phra Kaew and shopping at Chatuchak Market jump to mind, if you’re looking to do Bangkok like a hi-so local, then a VIP movie-viewing at Siam Paragon cannot be missed.
For 850 baht, quite nearly the price of a regular movie-going experience in the United States, you will get the movie theatre equivalent of the royal treatment. Complimentary drinks? Check. A free foot massage? Check. Feeling incredibly posh while you watch the film in a personal Barcalounger? Check, check, check.
The theatres you’re looking for are the Nokia Ultra Screen cinemas at Siam Paragon. Before I took the Nokia Ultra Screen plunge, I had heard rumours of its opulence and the real thing did not disappoint. Arrive early to take advantage of the waiting lounge equipped with snazzy lighting, comfy couches, free cookies and beverages. If you want to cash in on the complimentary foot massage that comes with the ticket, the waiting lounge is the place to do it.
Your movie seat will be in one of the loungers scattered around the room and will come equipped with blanket, pillow and the ability to recline into a bed. If by the previews you are already doubting that you are really still in Thailand, then the mandatory pre-movie moment of standing to pay homage to the King will be a welcome reminder. It doesn’t matter how much you pay, you still gotta stand.
In a strange way, this experience is as stereotypically Bangkok as the famous sites. This is a town that likes its experiences fancy, its interiors highly air-con, and its snacks delicious; these cinemas have put all of those Bangkok likes into a neat and comfy little package.
The Nokia Ultra Screen theatres are located on the fifth floor of Siam Paragon. To reach the theatre, take the BTS to Siam and follow signs from the station into the mall.
