Much like the ladyboy scene in Bangkok, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is difficult to really understand. Gay-transexual agrees to sex change operation (which is botched) to get visa out of East Berlin, arrives in Middle America to have relationship fall apart, right as wall falls in Berlin. Begins very strange musical career, has songs stolen (and heart broken) by teenage boy. It sounds, honestly, like it wouldn’t work, but it is so very excellent. The story line is heart wrenching, the characters well developed, and the music fantastic.
Presented in rock opera format, the original was great, and I have high hopes for this version presented by Thai performers. It will be interesting to see if the themes in the show resonate differently with a Thai audience less scandalized by sexual-identity ambivalence than a Western audience. Maybe we’re all horrified by botched sex changes — one can only assume. But all the better if presented in rousing rock format!
Hedwig and the Angry Inch will be performed at the Black Box Theatre on Bangkok University’s Rangsit Campus. Show starts at 18:00 Thurs-Sun, with an additional matinee Saturday and Sunday at 14:00. Show runs until July 31. Tickets can be purchased through Thai Ticket Major to save a trip to the box office. Black Box Theater is located on Phaholyothin Road north of the old Don Muang Airport. Buses 39 and 510 depart from Victory Monument every 10 minutes (a 35 minute trip, 20 baht) or you can take the BTS to Mor Chit and take a cab from there (a 15 minute drive, around 150 baht). Stop by Soi Ari on your way back for some post theatre dinner and drinks!
