Outdoor Samui for kids

Published by at 5:04 pm under For kids

Besides the obvious choice of endless perfect beaches to visit on Ko Samui, the island offers a slew of daytime activities for families. Here’s a selection.

Mini golf

Wish they would put magnets in these holes!

Although there is a mini golf course in Choeng Mon, the cost is quite pricey at about 400B per person. We discovered a bargain just around the corner at Arayaburi Resort, where families can enjoy a round of mini golf on a rather interesting course for only 100B per adult, children free. The resort has a lovely beachfront restaurant with enormous pool to recharge after a challenging game.

Waterfalls

There go your car keys Dad! Got your glasses?

Samui offers an array of beautiful waterfalls. Some involve a bit of a hike, so are not suitable for young children, but Namuang 1, just south of Lamai on the Ring Road, is only a few hundred metres’ walk and has pools for swimming. For only 20B, buy a basket of fruit to feed the elephants too, guaranteed to create excitement.

And you thought ellies couldn't smile!

Wat Plai Laem

Do we have to go, Mum? I want to feed the fish again!

Wat Plai Laem, a few hundred metres past Big Buddha, is probably Samui’s most colourful temple, and houses two impressive statues vying for attention – the laughing Buddha, and the eighteen-arm strong Buddha. Each statue is approached by way of a tiled bridge over a large lake that is teeming with supersized fish, waiting to be fed. For 10B, buy a bucket of food to throw to the fish, and see the water bubble up as they fight their way to the surface to gorge themselves. Wat Plai Laem is a rather cheery temple to visit, and its bright colours, turtles, fish, paddle boats and friendly temple dogs and cats make it a good option for children to visit.

Football golf

Golf, island style!

For a different take on golf, try football golf in Choeng Mon. The course is set in a coconut plantation, and designed for all levels of skill and age. The same rules apply as regular golf, with a par for each hole, but it is much easier to find a lost ball, and no clubs are required.

Massage

Oh the stress of being a four-year old!

With Thailand’s massages being so affordable, it’s quite within the realm of possibility to treat little ones while you relax with a rubdown at a beach sala. You’ll have a relaxed kid at the end, to boot. (Here’s one experience of getting a child massaged in Bali.) Pedicures can also be a great ‘mum and me’ option.

Water sports

I AM paddling Mum!

Rent a kayak at Chaweng Beach and explore the shallow waters. Mum and Dad can paddle, while little ones look out for fish, or spot interesting things on the shore. Most vendors will have life jackets available.
