File this under “World’s Weirdest Shopping Malls.” That Bangkok has a love affair with shopping malls is not a secret. It’s a destructive trend at times, such as when they city decides to get rid of a wildly popular and fun market (RIP Suan Lum Night Market) so that yet another department store/hotel combination can be erected, but it can often also have hilarious results. Mansion 7 is one of this most hilarious results I’ve ever seen.

The signage bills it as a “boutique thriller mall“, but it’s basically a haunted house-themed shopping experience. The central courtyard has fun-fair style games to play. There are two bars in the mall, including a beer bar that has Hoegardeen and Warsteiner on tap. The main draw is the haunted house, two floors of starts and frights with “shows” starting every half hour. It’s 180 baht per person — a bit pricey, but the haunted house is good fun.

As for shopping, there are some “scary” themed stores, but also a vintage goods store and a shoe store. To complete the effect, there’s also a sex shop in the worst possible style: too cute to be sexy, not well enough stocked to be useful. If you need some Hello Kitty brand flavored body paint, this is your place.

Mansion 7 also has plenty of food, from a burger joint to traditional Thai surrounding the outside of the courtyard. Located right next to i-Karaoke on Rachada in Huai Kwang, it’s a great stop pre-karaokefest for some random entertainment.

After a haunted house and some karaoke, there are plenty of late night eats around the Huai Kwang market — turn back south and cross Ratchadapisek at the lights. Continue up that street, past the Ganesha shrine, for a plethora of eating options — the pad thai stall on the corner immediately after the temple is excellent.
