A new Ko Samui hotel with a name that’s a mouthful opened at the beginning of June 2012. Boutique the Green Bay View Hotel is located on the top floor of a two-storey shopping complex, at the junction to the airport from Bang Rak. The building was originally designed as shops downstairs and offices above, but when there were no takers for office space, the owner cleverly converted them into urban-style hotel suites, with a reception area downstairs.
If convenience to transport is near the top of your list, then, let’s call it the Green Hotel, for sake of ease, is a good option. The airport is only a five-minute drive away, and the Bang Rak pier with the Seatran ferry to Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao is a 200 metre walk away, making this a great layover for early departures or late arrivals to Samui. Those not wanting to hire their own transport need not worry, as songthaews and motorbike taxis pass by regularly. To add to the convenience, a Family Mart is downstairs, the Big Buddha fresh market is across the road, and a Tesco Express is 300 metres away. Several excellent restaurants are within easy walking distance.
Rooms are furnished with crisp white bedding, spacious wardrobes and full length mirrors. In-room facilities include free WiFi and flat screen TV with cable channels, safety box, fridge as well as bathrooms with hot water showers and options of king size or twin beds. Each room has a private balcony with cafe table and chairs, and a view of the lively market below, the ferry coming and going and a sea glimpse over the market’s rooftop.
The restaurant located in the lobby is modern, with charcoal grey walls, bulbous red glass pendant lights, white tablecloths and a TV to watch the news or sport. A lounge area offers free use of a computer and WiFi. Breakfast is of the continental buffet variety, and lunches include set menus at fair prices, such as three courses and a drink for around 200 baht. Alternatively, order from the menu. A burger and fries will set you back 120 baht, and a soup or salad 60 to 80 baht.
On the down side, the hotel does not have a pool, although they have plans to construct one shortly in the rock garden behind the building – we’ll check back in a couple of months. This is not too serious an omission, as several resorts on the island welcome day visitors, and Bang Rak beach is only a few minutes’ walk away.
This hotel is still too new to tell, but we predict their patronage would be business or transit travellers due to its convenient location. The rates are reasonable for the quality on offer, with the studio rooms priced at 1,200 baht per night, and good deals on monthly stays.
Those preferring bungalow-type accommodation, still in the area, may want to try Secret Garden Beach Bungalows at a similar price, or the midrange option Villa Tanamera, with its spacious villas and central lap pool, located on Bang Rak beach.
