Review: Nikki Beach, Lipa Noi, Ko Samui

Published by at 2:17 pm under Accommodation

The Nikki Beach group is renowned world-wide for throwing legendary events, with locations in party hubs such as Cabo San Lucas, Marrakech, Miami Beach, Mallorca, Marbella, St Barth and St Tropez. Nikki Beach Lipa Noi is the first to include accommodation in the mix, adding villas for partygoers to recover in.

Not a bad spot to recover after a party.

The accommodation consists of villas laid out in the garden, some with sea views, and others beachfront. There is little difference in view and privacy however, so it’s not really worth paying extra for the beachfront ones. The villas are large at 63 square metres, and offer free WiFi as well as a turndown service. Breakfast is in the Bakery Cafe, which offers tempting baked goods, baguettes and coffee to go too, so can be taken to the beach or your room.

In-room facilities include flat-screen TVs as well as iPod docking stations, so music fundis can enjoy their own tunes. Beds are king size, and the minibars stock a comprehensive range of hard tack if walking to the bar is too much trouble. Bathrooms boast his and hers basins, a rainshower and Neutrogena products. Room rates range from 3,500 baht in low season for a sea view room, to about 9,000 baht in peak season for a beachfront one.

Getting ready for a wedding.

Those that feel like working off the party from the night before can take a dip in the large beachfront pool surrounded by salas with daybeds and wispy fabric drapes, or sweat it out in the fitness centre.

If being around the happening crowd is your thing, then Nikki Beach is the way to go. If this isn’t really your scene, all the glam and pomp could be a bit off-putting.The resort hosts frequent events, and from December 23 until January 7, a party is thrown each day or night, from “Miami does Ko Samui” to “Flamenco Full Moon” — and then going all out on New Year’s Eve.

Although the resort is located along quiet and undeveloped Lipa Noi Beach, beware that there is no peace and quiet when such events are on – perfect however for those looking to just roll into bed as the sun is rising. Nikki Beach frequently hosts weddings, so if you happen to be around to witness one, look out for the elephant donned in the wedding party’s colour scheme — hmmm.

Not your average wedding guest.

On the downside (or upside, depending on your take on it), there is not much else going on in Lipa Noi, and it’s at least a 25-minute drive to Lamai, and further still to Chaweng and other tourist spots. The town of Nathon is only a 10-minute drive for shopping and a few restaurants. Taxis from this side will be pricy so it would be best to have your own transport if you plan on venturing from the resort much. If you like the idea of quiet Lipa Noi beach, but want something a little cheaper and less glam, nearby Lipa Bay Resort is a good option.

Meanwhile, if you’d just like to pop your head in but not stay, “Amazing Sunday Brunches” are held each Sunday, and are open for outside visitors. No boring fry-ups here; the resort puts on a notable buffet spread alongside the pool area, including an omelette station, waffle station, Thai table, sushi selection and a table representing international dishes. Add to this pasta, a meat carvery as well as a dessert selection – and, well, it doesn’t come cheap at 950 baht per person. To be fair, as it stretches from 11:00 to 16:00, you can get breakfast and lunch out of it.
