Golf on Ko Samui

Published by at 1:53 am under Sights & activities

Ko Samui has much to offer golf fanatics, whether they are pros, or just looking to whack a few balls for exercise. Those visiting with kids will enjoy the more family-orientated options available. Here’s a round-up of the golf opportunities to be found on the island.

Don’t let that view be a distraction.

Santiburi Golf Course and Country Club, one of Asia’s finest golf courses, is located in Mae Nam Hills, north of the island. The Santiburi course came to fame when it hosted the 2006 Bangkok Airways Open and it now regularly hosts prominent cups. The fairways and greens are set in 23 acres of coconut groves, with views over the bay and to the neighbouring islands as spectacular as the landscape.

Caddie…  some help please.

The nine-hole Bophut Hills Golf Club is located in the hills behind Big C and was designed and built by world renowned golf course architect, Piraporn Namatra, who also produced the Santiburi course. Golfers of all levels are welcome here, and there is no dress code, making it a relaxed place suitable for all, from beginners and families through to professionals and experienced players.

The Royal Samui Golf Club is situated in the hills between Chaweng and Lamai, signposted from the ring road. This nine-hole course shares panoramic views to neighbouring islands across the bay and like Bophut is relaxed and suitable for all levels.

Samui Golf Club and Driving Range can be found high up in the hills above Bophut. The name is a bit misleading, as it’s only a driving range and putting green rather than an actual course. The range extends over 250 yards and the putting green is a good spot to practise between games at one of the island’s courses. There is a golf shop on site, and tuition is also available in English and German. T: (077) 245 236.

Samui’s other driving range, Lamai Driving Range, is located on the ring road just past the post office, and is a good place to hit some balls and brush up on the strokes if you’re staying in the area. T: (081) 090 7213.

Golf island style.

Samui also has several options for mini golf enthusiasts. Two of these are in Choeng Mon – one at Arayaburi Resort and the other on the 4171 leading into Choeng MonTreasure Island Mini Golf is adjoined to Gringos Mexican Restaurant in Chaweng, just off the Beach Road.

For something a bit different – Samui Football Golf is set amid a coconut grove near Choeng Mon beach. Regular golf rules apply, but instead of using clubs, a football is kicked from hole to hole. Balls are provided, so no kit is required. The grounds of the 18-hole, par 66 course are well maintained, and the course is easy to follow. The fairways and greens offers a fair amount of shade, but as with any of the normal golf courses, an early morning or late afternoon start would still be recommended.
