Portobello Bistro is the pizza joint of preference in Ko Tao’s Haad Sairee, offering pizzas with a great choice of toppings and no skimping on the portions. It’s open, airy, furnished with dark wood and bustles with people, yet manages to retain a warm atmosphere, making it worth seeking out.
The menu includes some tasty starters but is otherwise mainly comprised of pizza, pasta in two sizes and salads, with a few fish and meat dishes too. Pasta dishes cost around 130 to 280 baht, while pizzas are 170 to 290 baht.
Their salads are Western style and you certainly won’t want for more; they come with freshly baked dough balls which you can’t help but finish. The garlic bread is pizza based and not fluffy rolls, so if you have been missing this treat then this is where it’s at. They have a great selection of Western-style desserts and even a dessert share platter if you can manage it. The cocktails are delicious, or choose something from the varied wine list.
Like anywhere when it’s very busy, particularly with large groups, service can be a little slow but on the whole you will get served efficiently and politely. Most diners don’t linger and are simply eating and heading out for the night so if there’s no table free then the wait is not usually long.
If you simply can’t wait then there are many restaurants close by — if it’s pizza you are looking for then wander to the main road towards the petrol station and clinic and hook a left, where you will find Farrago’s on your right.
Portobello offers a delivery service and this makes them a firm favourite among locals. Orders are delivered accurately and quickly, which means they arrive hot, a service in my opinion no other pizza and pasta establishment on Ko Tao can better. Addresses and food delivery can be problematic on the island, but Portobello have their own maps, so pop in and have a look and find out what your address is with them.
If you are staying in a resort, a simple call will let you know if they can get to you. The phone is answered in English but be patient and clear with your request.
Portobello was the first restaurant to move into the road which runs from the slip road to the beach and Lotus Bar, and up to the clinic and gas station on the main road. This is the same road that’s home to the ladyboy cabaret; the street now bustles with activity but due to the restaurant’s clever use of greenery, you won’t feel like you are dining roadside.
