Khun Mor’s might not be the trendiest eatery of Chiang Mai’s chic Nimmanhemin district but they do clearly prioritise food quality over fancy decor. No gimmicky fusion dishes or quirky Thai versions of Western dishes for Nimman’ yuppies with more money than tastebuds; this is well prepared and reasonably priced Thai and north Thai classic cuisine in a pleasant setting.

The Doctor’s.

Khun Mor’s actually translates as “the Doctor’s”; decor is clean, simple and sharp and there’s a choice of an air-con room, (five baht supplement per person), a spacious inside fan-cooled seating section or a small but pleasant garden area.

There’s something for everyone, with a huge choice of dishes, mixing, as we mentioned, regular Thai classics; tom yam, coconut curries, pad Thai, basil and chilli stir-fries, fried rice, a simply massive noodle selection, a wide range of local specialties such as northern curries, Chiang Mai sausages, the ubiquitous khao soi, and even various Isaan or northeastern options such as laap, sun-dried beef and som tam (green papaya salad), plus a few attempts at basic Western dishes.

Probably an 8 out of 10.

You’ll have to forgo the carved veggie decorations and, being situated in Nimmanhemin, you will pay a few baht more per dish than less trendy parts of town, but they don’t exaggerate as much as some of their nearby competitors and the grub is consistently very good and copious. A classic pad Thai for example goes for 59 baht or 89 baht for a fresh prawn version, khao soi is 59 baht and a north Thai curry will set you back 99 baht (yes everything ends in a nine).

They do receive a fair amount of expat trade; the menu is in English and staff speak some English and service is generally acceptable. Don’t expect live bands and they don’t open late, but it is an excellent spot to check out some well prepared Chiang Mai dishes if you’re in the area for say brunch, lunch or an early dinner. Drinks-wise there’s a full selection of fruit juices and they serve the excellent Doi Thung local coffee. Beers and soft drinks also available. Note it can get very busy at times, especially for weekend lunches.

Simple but agreeable setting.
