New restaurant Nirvana in popular Fisherman’s Village offers a selection of Thai, Asian-fusion and Western food. The decor is warm and inviting, with a lounge-type feel created by wooden and rattan furniture, burgundy cushions and drapes and candles on the table.
Choose from several seating areas: stools around the bar, inside dining tables, streetfront bar tables as well as tables on the deck overlooking Bophut beach. On a Friday night, during the Fisherman’s Village weekly walking street market, the tables overlooking the street are great for people-watching. If you prefer to escape the crowds, walk through the restaurant to the deck that leads to the beach.
Owner-cum-chef Torben Eriksen is Danish but grew up in South Africa; his cosmopolitan background suits the village with its eclectic mix of European and Thai restaurants. An open-plan kitchen means that you can watch the food being prepared. One of Nirvana’s most popular dishes is its peri-peri chicken – a half chicken grilled on the open flame (here’s where the open-plan kitchen becomes impressive), basted with house-made peri-peri sauce, and served with a potato spiral and cream of coconut pumpkin. At 370 baht, it’s not the cheapest meal you’ll have on Samui, but for the portion and quality, it’s a winner and easy to see why it’s so popular — five were ordered at our table of 12.
Another popular main course dish is the Steak Nirvana, a fillet steak stuffed with feta and jalapeno chillies, served with a mushroom, cream and jalapeno sauce, and a potato spiral on the side (490 baht).
Thai favourites include a chicken massaman curry (240 baht) and green curry (200 baht). All the Thai dishes come with rice, so there’s no need to order separately, and the portions are huge – you could quite easily share a dish, and add a salad.
Starters range between 140 and 170 baht. Particularly good are the fresh Vietnamese spring rolls. If you’re just feeling peckish and want to enjoy the Fisherman’s Village vibe, order the starter platter for two, which offers a selection of chicken satays, prawn cakes, stuffed wontons, spring rolls, tempura prawns and son-in-law eggs, for 380 baht.
Although the menu doesn’t have a lot in the vegetarian department, each time we’ve visited, they’ve been more than happy to adapt a dish to a veggie option.
Oh and for company, you’ll have the neighbourhood cats asking for prawn shells. They’re a friendly bunch of three brothers and love to cuddle on a lap, or play with a handbag strap.
