You could be forgiven for thinking that Ko Tao is just about diving and partying, with no thought to healthy lifestyles and fitness pursuits, but you’d be wrong. Here’s a wrap on fitness activities on the island.
Yoga is an island mainstay in Thailand, Ko Tao included. The longest running sala, Shambala, is in Sairee at Blue Wind Resort. Find the sala by walking north from the main road 7-eleven. Classes, open to all levels, run daily at 10:00, plus on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday there’s a class at 16:00, while on Monday and Thursday there’s an additional 18:30 class. The sala is clean, airy and quiet, offering a restive space for practice. Classes cost 300 baht, or buy a pack of 10 for 2,500 baht. Styles vary over the lessons and private classes are available too.
Grounded in Sairee is a recently added sala, and holds tai chi, self defense, yoga and meditation classes, as well as acupuncture sessions. Yoga classes are daily at 10:00, 13:00 and 19:00, and cost 150 baht; tai chi is taught at 08:00 on Monday and Friday, 07:30 on Wednesday. Self defense is on at Monday and Friday, 17:00. As they are just getting started, there’s a lot going on, so do pop in for the latest information when you’re on Ko Tao. Find Grounded by leaving the main road 7-eleven and walking away from the sea and up the hill and then turning right at Suksamran Villas. The sala is just a few minutes further on the right hand side behind Koh Exist.
If you are staying further south then you can also practise yoga at New Heaven in Chalock Ban Khao. Classes are held daily at 11:00 and 17:30.
Ko Tao has a modern, newly furbished gym in Sairee, away from the main hustle and bustle. Leave the main road 7-eleven, walk away from the beach and towards the boxing stadium and you will find the gym just past it on the right hand side. It’s open to anyone, with a daily membership 200 baht, then a range of memberships if you’re staying longer. Open 07:30 to 23:00 weekdays, 08:00 to 22:00 weekends.
Ko Tao also has a fully equipped Muay Thai school. The stadium hosts weekly fights as well as training packages on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Training starts early morning before the sun heats up the island, and there’s also an afternoon session too. Single classes are 400 baht each and a monthly package is 7,300 baht. The centre is also home to a small gym. The stadium is up the road from the main road 7-eleven in Sairee (just before the gym).
If you are staying Mae Haad, another smaller Muay Thai training centre is just opposite the Lomprayah pier. All levels are welcome and packages are available for daily, weekly and monthly training. Daily classes are 400 baht, while a six-session per week monthly package is 6,900 baht. Open daily 08:00 to 21:00.
After all this energy is expended you are likely to need some nourishment and nutrition. Happily healthy food is also available on Ko Tao. Living Juices operate in the morning just alongside Banyan Bar and opposite Asia Divers in Sairee, serving freshly pressed juices. The team here also offers nutrition advice and health coaching, and they run regular workshops covering various aspects of nutritional food preparation.
But you don’t have to be indoors to stay fit on Ko Tao; many pursuits will not only keep you fit but let you enjoy the island too. Take a walk up to a viewpoint, explore the coastline with a kayak, run along Sairee Beach at sunset or snorkel until your heart’s content at any one of the lovely bays.
