Accommodation options on Ko Tao have changed. Once there were rustic huts on the beach but now the island is home to some top class resorts as well. There are indeed still fan-cooled bungalows and rooms in the 500 to 600 baht range, and some even have hot water. If you are happy to share a bathroom then there are some 300 baht truly basic rooms to be had too. Recently though a spate of hostels have opened, offering beds in dorm rooms from 250 baht per night with air-con, free Wifi and hot water.
The largest concentration is unsurprisingly nestled among Haad Sairee’s accommodation options. Spicy Backpackers is located well off the beaten track in an area of primarily residential homes. It lies in a quiet valley and the beds are in clean and simple rooms. This is undeniably your cheapest option, with a bed in a fan dorm just 150 baht, or 250 baht with air-con. Slightly closer to the action is Good Dreams, which feels more modern. All beds are 350 baht with air-con, hot water and free WiFi, and all dorms have eight beds. A small reception area has computer terminals, too. The location is quiet and it’s just off the main road that runs north from the 7-eleven parallel with the beach.
Jizo Hostel is located in Sairee central on the road that connects to two 7-elevens just steps away from Choppers Bar and Grill. Beds here are 300 baht with air-con and hot water, and they have options of dorms with four or eight beds. Koh Tao Backpackers was the first to open and is located along the track that runs between New Heaven Bakery and Davey Jones Locker. Beds are eight to a rooms and cost 300 baht per night with air-con and hot water. Guests have the use of the pool, bar and restaurant belonging to Davey Jones Locker too.
Koh Tao Hostel is located in Chalok Ban Khao and has six beds to a room. It’s the only other hostel to offer a fan option, which is 200 baht per night, while air-con bumps the price up to 300 baht. This joint is located just around the corner from the 7-eleven.
Not to be outdone, Mae Haad will soon see the opening of Koh Tao Central Hostel which will be the largest, with around 40 beds over three dorm rooms. The plan is to have one as a divers dorm, which will be quieter for those that don’t want to go out and party. Two large dorms hold the majority of beds while a smaller room has just six beds. Beds will cost 300 baht per night with air-con, hot water and WiFi. Care has been taken to offer guests a little more privacy than you might see in other locations too. This is due to open in March 2013 and is on the main road leading up from the Safety Stop Pub, opposite Reef Bar and Grill.
