Don’t let the somewhat austere frontage of Seven Suns Residence put you off; the interior is cosy and welcoming and this recent addition to Chiang Mai’s midrange options, though still a work in progress, is already a commendable one.
Formerly the Seven Suns Guesthouse, the place has received a complete facelift from new Lao-US owners, your friendly hosts Lester and Sanh. Again the exterior is deceptive since the four floors give an impression of it being quite a large establishment but in fact they have a grand total of just six rooms. Consequently the rooms are huge and all are formatted as kind of open-plan suites, with sleeping and sitting areas though lacking partitions between the two.
The corridors and stairwells may come across as somewhat stark — the facelift is still ongoing and you don’t usually spend too much time in the stairwell anyway — but the rooms themselves are great looking, comfortable and well fitted out. Decor is simple but tasteful with plenty of wooden furniture, minimal Lanna flourishes and all rooms come with air-con, flat screen TV, fridge and WiFi.
For what you’re getting, the rooms at 1,350 baht for smaller suites and 1,550 for larger ones are a great deal. These are five-star rooms at midrange prices. There’s a pleasant sitting area downstairs and considering the number of rooms a rather extensive menu. Breakfasts aren’t included in the room rates but for a 100 baht per person supplement you can choose from their many tasty breakfast options (100 baht would only get you a coffee and a juice elsewhere anyway!) Seven Suns also has plenty of salad and sandwich options as well as the usual Thai classics.
Finally, the location is pretty good too. Ratchamanka, in the southwest quadrant of the old city, is a relatively quiet thoroughfare yet you’re only a short walk from most of Chiang Mai’s main sites and the principal bar and restaurant area around Tha Pae and Loi Kroh. All in all, an excellent deal!
