Review: Suncliff Resort, Haad Rin, Ko Pha Ngan
Hotel deals of the day for Thailand -- check rates with Agoda
Suncliff is a really sweet resort that offers what is probably the best deal on Ko Pha Ngan’s Haad Rin for an air-con room, with pool, restaurant, WiFi and great views.
Both fan (600 baht) and air-con bungalows (1,000 baht or 1,200 baht during Full Moon) are on offer, with the air-con rooms offering far better views of Haad Rin bay than the fans, which overlook the jungle.
The air-con rooms are built up, as the name implies, a cliff that borders Haad Rin beach. Rooms are designed in a very unique way, with a large bed set up a platform, which also features a spacious fridge and TV. Down the platform is another single bed, so these rooms could comfortably sleep three people. The mattresses vary – some being far too hard, and some very soft. A hallway leads to a standard bathroom, and a larger-than-average balcony with chairs and a hammock. Sit there are look out at the vast ocean in front of you, with Ko Samui in the distance. The rooms are not dirty, but certainly not spotless — for the value you’re getting at these prices though you wouldn’t expect them to be. Deluxe air-con bungalows with kitchenettes are also available.
The fan rooms are a more standard shape, but are roomy and also have large balconies with hammocks. Plus, there’s hot water: an unusual quality in a fan room on the island. Three people could also easily sleep in these rooms.
This resort’s property is so large that there are three receptions. At the farthest reception from the main entrance, a small-but-charming pool with adjoining jacuzzi lies about as close to the cliff’s edge as it can get, providing swimmers with an incredible ocean view.
Surrounding it is a restaurant that serves up a good selection of Western and Thai dishes, including fish and chips for 150 baht, and fried chicken and basil for 70 baht. This is a cute little hideaway to chill out in, with a small selection of books provided, though the multitude of flies that land on diners and their food is a major downside. There are indoor and outdoor sections to the restaurant, and wooden sun loungers are also provided, though there is no padding.
Located just opposite Baan Talay, and around the corner from the 7-eleven, the main beach (sunrise side, where the Full Moon action takes place) is about a five-minute walk away, yet far enough away for Suncliff to be considered “quiet”. Haad Rin pier is also close, with boats leaving daily to Ko Samui. WiFi is available throughout the resort, but it works intermittently. The staff are very friendly.
