Review: Banyan House, Chaweng north, Ko Samui

Published by at 1:49 am under Accommodation

Banyan House is one of the few bed and breakfast establishments on Ko Samui, where most accommodation is in the form of resorts, bungalows or apartments. The giant coffee cup outside invites you to stop, and what you first notice is a blue windowed conservatory that forms the restaurant. Tables are set in the lush garden under giant trees, with dangling orchids.

You’re welcomed by the resident basset hounds and a rooster. The place is inviting from the moment you wander in. If you’re just looking for a drink or bite to eat, the coffee garden is open to the public for breakfast and lunch. Choose from a wide variety of sandwiches (120 baht), burgers (140 to 160 baht) breakfasts (120 to 160 baht), salads (120 baht), Thai favourites (average 120 baht) and yummy-looking desserts such as berry cheesecake for under 100 baht.

The setting is pretty in a colonial looking building, white cafe-style tables with floral cushions set under shaded garden, and the family pets running around (or lazing, actually).

Shade, most welcome.

On the day of our visit, the four-room guesthouse was fully booked but we managed to pop our head in the rooms as guests were checking out (but taking photos of unmade beds seemed… unseemly). A large communal lounge and TV room can be enjoyed downstairs, as well as three bedrooms, two with king-size beds and one with twin beds. An upstairs apartment with an outside entrance sleeps a maximum of six people. Rooms have air-con, and are tastefully furnished, each with an individual look, and each with an en-suite bathroom. Rooms have fridges and safes, satellite TV and WiFi access.

With just 4 rooms, best to book!

Banyan House doesn’t have a swimming pool, but there’s beach access via Karma across the road. There’s a bit of traffic noise in the conservatory restaurant, but not from within the main house where the bedrooms are located.

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to Banyan House of course.

Probably the best thing about Banyan House (other than the lovely trees and basset hounds) is the room rate – averaging 900 baht per night for the room, including breakfast served in the conservatory or garden.

Chaweng is only about a kilometre away, as is lovely Choeng Mon Beach – Banyan House is set in the middle of these two beach areas. Songthaews will pass this way, but hiring a scooter would offer more flexibility if you stay here.
