Ko Pha Ngan’s Bay Lounge and Resort is situated in its own private bay, but that certainly doesn’t make it secluded. The rooms, which are built up the side of a cliff, provide stunning views of Ko Samui. The entire resort’s decor, including that of the rooms, has a sort of Moroccan theme, and you wouldn’t be remiss comparing it to Starwood’s W hotels.
Room rates range from 2,800 to 4,200 baht for a beachfront room in high season. Rooms are small, but ultra-clean, modern and stylishly-decorated, with unique touches like mirrors on the ceiling. A big bed faces a huge window with lovely views of the bay below. White furniture and bedding with splashes of vibrant colour (some rooms with purple, others with red) give the interior a young-yet-classy touch. The bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a wall that comes up to one’s hip, so it’s not a room for those who aren’t totally comfortable with their sleeping partner. Still, the bathroom is spacious and has a similarly modern feel to the rest of the set-up, with a massive sink and an almost-too-big mirror and colourful tiled walls.
A pool provided for guests and residents of Ko Pha Ngan is a bonus, and room rates include breakfast at the chic lounge overlooking the ocean.
Thai chef Suphap and his crew serve up freshly-caught seafood, as well as a broad range of European and Thai dishes. Their signature Bay Lounge chicken, complete with a secret sauce, is a crowd pleaser.
The lounge has Saturday parties that act as warm-ups to whatever phase of the moon is being celebrated later that evening. At 18:00, their “SunDowner Starter” event provides guests with chilled out music and use of a small swimming pool. The vibe is complemented by DJ Boyonic, who spins live dance tunes to get everyone in the party spirit.
To find Bay Lounge, look for a sign while you’re driving up and down those steep hills to Haad Rin. It’s close to the top of one on the right, with a big sign. Careful – you have to drive down a rather steep hill.
Being three kilometres from Haad Rin Nok, Bay Lounge isn’t exactly walking-distance from the Full Moon Party, but those who choose to stay here normally like being able to get away from Haad Rin without actually leaving Haad Rin. Plus, one of its nearest neighbours is well-known Coral Bungalows, which hosts epic pool parties during the Full Moon period, so the party is never far.
Highly recommended for the young, hip, stylish crowd.
