If you need an Italian fix while on Ko Tao, then there’s no other place than Dolce Vita. While not the cheapest, if you love Italian food then it’s worth every baht as it’s a cut well above a run of the mill pizza joint.
Dolce Vita is in Mae Haad, on what most locals, due to a one-way road system, call the down road. If you follow the one-way system, then it’s the only road you are allowed to go down the hill on towards the sea. You will find Dolce Vite about half way along on your left hand side.
This large white double-fronted restaurant sparkles inside in gleaming white as well, yet still manages to look warm and welcoming. Seating is mostly at white concrete booths, which are intimate but don’t allow for movement if you want to get closer to your plate. Smaller wooden freestanding tables are dotted around too, plus there’s a lounge-type area in the centre where you can snack, drink wine and wait for your fellow diners to arrive.
The food is premium Italian fare. They do serve pizza, but this is far from a pizza joint and the prices do reflect that. However you certainly get what you pay for and it is magnifico! Expect to pay at least 250 baht plus for a main meal and you will want a starter and dessert even if you share.
The meal itself is scrumptious, artfully plated and filling. During my time eating here on Ko Tao, I have never had a bad meal here. The service is attentive and prompt and the owner, Alex, is usually on the floor to keep a keen eye and check your table is happy with everything.
Dolce Vita would suit anyone who loves Italian food and isn’t on too much of a shoestring budget — great for couples and a celebration meal as well. If you’re staying in Mae Haad, it’s worth checking out.
