Review: Blue Ocean Garden, Ao Chaophao, Ko Pha Ngan

Published by at 3:07 am under Ko Pha Ngan

Couples looking for a great midrange bungalow on Ko Pha Ngan’s west coast need look no further than Blue Ocean Garden, located on Ao Chaophao, at the north end of the beach beside Pirate Bar.

Blue Ocean Garden resort

Leafy. Green.

Three types of rooms, all air-con, are on offer at Blue Ocean Garden: standards plus garden and seaview bungalows. The standard rooms (1,100 baht) are older than the other two options, and look and feel their age, smelling musty and showing wear and tear on the walls and furniture.

The garden (1,700 baht) and seaview bungalows (2,000 baht), however, are far newer and feel fresh and modern. Though not terribly spacious, the rooms are big enough to hold a wicker wardrobe and dresser, as well as an ample-size bed, TV, small fridge and safe without feeling cramped. The polished concrete walls are adorned with contemporary Thai paintings.

The garden bungalows have simple clean bathrooms, while the seaview bathrooms are larger and more elaborately decorated.

A charming beachside restaurant called La Dolce Vita serves up delicious Italian dishes like house-made ricotta and spinach ravioli with gorgonzola sauce (280 baht) alongside Thai favourites, like stir-fried shrimp with garlic and vegetables (150 baht).

Mmmm garlic shrimp.

They also do Italian desserts, including sorbetto lime (80 baht) and affogato al whiskey (120 baht). Their wine list isn’t extensive, but compared to the one option offered by most restaurants on the island, it’s decent, with red and white house wines (110 baht a glass) and eight other options, priced at around 800 baht for a carafe. The restaurant is on a raised stage-like platform near the beach, and has classy wooden padded furniture, as well as a lounge deck with Thai-style cushion seating. Intricately-carved wooden detailing throughtout the restaurant lends the place even more of an upscale feel. It’s a lovely, romantic spot for a beachside date, if you don’t mind the somewhat cheesy music they play.

Romance at La Dolce Vita.

The resort boasts around 10 sun loungers, some padded, some not, which sit under the shade of palm trees. The beach here is not fantastic, with the sand grainy and rocky towards the shore and the water staying shallow for ages. It is, however, very pretty to look at from a slight distance. Behind the sun loungers, the resort has a lovely grassy area surrounded by well-groomed gardens.

Chill out in the resort’s gazebo.

The resort’s only real downfall is its location beside Pirate Bar, which has monthly Pirate parties that are noisy and rowdy, and go on until dawn. But if you manage to avoid staying there when the party is on, you can skip that setback altogether. Or, better yet, throw on some fluorescent glow paint, get a bucket, and join the partiers!
