If you’re ever in the mood for some delicious Western food while on the northern tip of Ko Pha Ngan, head straight for The World’s End in Ao Chaloklum. This popular, charming joint does some of the best coffee around (with a real espresso machine), and some of the best sandwiches and wraps on the island.
The cafe faces Chaloklum’s fishing pier, and provides patrons with typical expansive Ko Pha Ngan ocean vistas.
The open plan means that even indoors is “al fresco” and fans keep the place cool instead of air-con. The decor inside is bold. The walls have been given a slick coat of vibrant red paint, and are adorned with photos of celebrities.
But it’s not just the inviting setup that keeps the regulars regular and makes the tourists flock here. The menu offers a fantastic selection of dishes that will make you say “this is exactly what I am craving”. Go for their gourmet English breakfast (240 baht), or a mix-and-match sandwich, wrap or panini (115 to 200 baht, depending on what you add to it); vegetarians will be kept happy, and there are gluten-free options as well. All dishes we’ve tried have been prepared with the freshest, highest quality ingredients. Highly recommended is the falafel wrap with garlic yogurt (115 baht). The lattes are also popular, as are the smoothies.
The cafe also has high-speed WiFi and latest editions of newspapers and magazines — though there’s usually only one copy so if someone else is reading the paper you were after, you’ll have to be patient. The staff are also friendly and accommodating.
Find the World’s End directly opposite Chaloklum’s main pier, or on the left-hand side of the horseshoe road near the beach accessed by turning at the 7-Eleven down the road towards the beach, and continuing to the left for about a minute on a motorbike.
If you’re staying elsewhere on the island, Chaloklum makes a great spot to visit as it’s one of the few parts of the island that’s retained a real village feel, with plenty of decent places to stay and eat as well.
