Where to watch the best sunsets on Ko Pha Ngan

Published by at 11:59 pm under Ko Pha Ngan

There’s nothing like watching the perfect sunset at the end of a perfect beach day. On Ko Pha Ngan, there are all kinds of spots to watch that fiery golden ball sink into the waters, but we do have our favourites. Here are our picks for Ko Pha Ngan’s best sunset spots.

Amsterdam Bar, Ao Plaaylaem

Amsterdam Bar Ko Pha Ngan

The perfect end to the perfect day

It’s a bit of a hike up to this bar overlooking Ao Playlaaem — you’ll have to climb a series of steps that’ll make your thighs burn — but it’ll be well worth it when you see the incredible vistas from the restaurant area. Sit back with a chilled cocktail or beer and ponder your day as you observe one of Ko Pha Ngan’s late afternoon best panoramas. (T: (077) 238 477; http://www.amstardambar.com)

Haad Thian, West

Enjoy the serenity.

This little-known beach is just south of Haad Salad, and has incredible sunset views without the crowds. The road is dirt much of the way, so be careful if you’re travelling by motorbike. If you can find a spot up on the hill to watch the sunset, you’ll get the best view of all.

Secret Beach, Haad Son

Secret Beach Ko Pha Ngan

Simply magnificent

Secret Beach may not actually be much of a secret, with its name written on a brightly-coloured board in front of the road that leads to it (find it just south of Haad Yao), but it still has a quiet charm to it. Enjoy the sunset from the beach’s family-owned bar and restaurant, which serves up Thai and Western dishes, as well as refreshing beers and cocktails. It sits alone on the beach, with the only other facility being a large hotel at the north end of the beach. Some of Ko Pha Ngan’s most vibrant sunsets can be witnessed here.

Songserm Pier

Let Ko Pha Ngan bid you adieu in style.

Does your boat arrive or leave right when the afternoon ends? Don’t fret about missing your last Ko Pha Ngan sunset; some stunning sunsets can be seen from Thong Sala pier. You may not see the sun sink into the sea, but the sky can be transformed with streaks of bright reds, purples and oranges.

The sun sets on the island between 18:00 and 19:00, so make sure you have a seat at whichever destination you choose before then, to ensure optimal viewing. Happy sunsetting!
