Off-beach bargains in Ko Samui’s north

Published by at 1:10 pm under Accommodation

Although staying on the beach is great, sometimes giving up a waterfront view in Ko Samui means you can get a bit more space and extra facilities at lower prices. With so many bars and restaurants on the beach, should you stay in an off-beach option you can still wiggle your toes in the sand while you sip on a cocktail. Here are a few off-beach bargains along Ko Samui’s north coast, all within walking distance to the beach.

Away from the crowds.

Away from the crowds at Samui Heritage Resort.

A stylish and well-hidden little resort within walking distance to Fisherman’s Village is Samui Heritage Resort. Here you get more than just a room, with a little lounge and dining area plus kitchenette within each suite. The one-bedroom suites go for as little as 800 baht per night if you book online with Agoda. There’s a fair-sized pool, and the resort is set back from the road, so it’s peaceful. The resort is only about a 300-metre walk to the back entrance of Fisherman’s Village and Bophut beach. Cross the Ring Road, and walk past the five-star Hansar Resort.

Sundays Resort -- not only for Sundays.

Sundays Resort — not only for Sundays.

We love Sunday’s Sanctuary Resort & Spa. It’s located in Bophut, with the access road being just opposite the fresh food market. It’s not often you’ll find such stylish accommodation at this price, and what this resort loses from not being beachside it more than makes up in tranquil appeal, with a tropical garden and paths over water and great facilities. You’ll find options of studio rooms in a double-storey block or individual bungalow type rooms near the large, grey slate pool. The look is modern and fresh with concrete cool screed floors and beds set onto platforms on the floor. There’s a sociable restaurant, a well-priced spa and Fisherman’s Village and Bophut beach are only a 10-minute walk away. Keep an eye on specials via Agoda, where we’ve picked up air-con rooms here for around 600 baht per night.

Mayaburi is conveniently located down what is locally known as the Ghost Road, which joins Bang Rak to both Chaweng and the Bophut section of the Ring Road, exiting near Big C. A 15-minute walk with bring you out at Bang Rak beach, where you’ll find several beach bars and resorts if you feel like a bit of sea and sand.

Mayaburi - with a pool like this, who needs the beach?

Mayaburi: With a pool like this, who needs the beach?

The swimming pool at Mayaburi is huge, and the rooms are of a good size and well-equipped. Several local bars and restaurants are located along this road, and if you’ve hired a scooter, it’s a good central location, although not the best if you intend walking everywhere, particularly at night, as it’s a bit of a pot-holed road with no footpaths.
