Okay, so Phuket is hot and tropical and certainly has no chimneys for Santa to shimmy down for gift delivery. But as a Thai island with an international outlook festive cheer infuses the humid air through Christmas and the New Year. Several resorts and restaurants across the island will be cooking up big spreads for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so if you’re looking for a turkey dinner fix you’ll need not look far to find one. Here’s just a sampling of what’s on offer.
Shanti Lodge guesthouse in Chalong always puts on some hearty yet reasonably priced festive meals, and on Christmas Day it will start with a brunch buffet and secret Santa exchange for 250 baht for adults, 180 baht for children six to 12 and free for children five and under. In the evening, they’ll have a turkey dinner and buffet with a big selection of appetisers, mains, sides and desserts for 950 baht for adults, 350 baht for kids six to 12 and free for the wee ones five and under. Dusit Thani Laguna resort on Bangtao beach is hosting a poolside Christmas Eve dinner buffet that includes seasonal favourites including roast turkey, scallops, grilled seafood and festive desserts. Children will be treated to their own special buffet corner and gifts from Santa. The buffet is priced at 2,900++ baht per person and half-price for children aged six to 12. T: (076) 362999 ext 7303.
Friendship Beach in Rawai will host on a Christmas Eve party and dinner buffet with live music. Among the appetisers are smoked salmon lox and assorted meat and cheese platter, while the mains include roast turkey, baked ham and a seafood potpourri. For dessert, choose from fresh berry cheesecake, custard and chocolate pastries and fresh tropical fruit trees. Adults pay 1,450++ baht and for kids under 12 it’s 390++ baht. The newly-opened Bimi Beach Club at Surin beach is putting on a Christmas beach barbecue on both December 24 and December 25, starting at 19:00. For 1,290++ baht for adults and 700++ baht for kids, get your fill of shellfish, freshly-caught Andaman prawns, moo yang (grilled marinated pork rib), neua yang (mixed grill), pla pao (fish marinated in curry sauce in banana leaf), grilled meats and more. Catholic Christmas mass services will be held at a number of locations around Phuket. On Christmas Eve, services will be held at 17:00 in English and 23:30 in Italian at Sacred Heart Church in Patong beach, at Le Meridien Hotel at 24:00 in English, and in Phuket Town at Church of Our Lady of the Assumption at 19:00 in Thai. For a local family-oriented event, join the Phuket Christmas Festival at Surakul Sport Stadium (near Central Festival mall) in Phuket Town from 17:00 to 22:00 on December 28, organised by the Phuket Christian Committee. Want to add a little festive spirit to your hotel room? For gifts, gift wrapping and Christmas decorations, all of Phuket’s shopping malls have been playing Christmas tunes since November and are selling fairy lights, Santa hats, gift baskets, ornaments and faux Christmas trees by the boatload. Central Festival on the bypass road in Phuket Town and Jungceylon in Patong have the best quality Christmas goods on sale.
