New Year’s Eve is a big deal in Phuket and it can be celebrated both on the cheap and in lavish style. With fireworks going off most everywhere across the island, those on a tight budget may simply pick up their drinks and snacks from the local mom and pop shop and head down to the nearest beach. Or, if you’re looking to splash out, you could join one of the elaborate gala parties happening at some of Phuket’s top resorts. Here are just a few options ranging from free to splurgey in cost.
One of the biggest private New Year’s Eve parties will be at Catch Beach Club, which is hosting its Countdown Beach Party on Surin beach starting at 22:00. The 1,500++ baht price tag includes three cocktails and the entertainment including fireworks at midnight, with standing room only. If you want to join the full night of Catch events starting at 20:00 including the beach barbecue, free flow drinks and champagne, the cost ratchets up to 10,000++ baht. T: (076) 316 500.
In Kata beach, flowboarding fans will enjoy a night of unlimited riding from 21:00 till 02:00 for 2,000 baht at Surf House Phuket. DJ music and professional dancers will provide the entertainment all night long, while the rooftop bar will serve as a fine perch to enjoy the two-for-one vodka drinks and the fireworks. XANA Beach Club on Bangtao beach is hosting a night of DJ music by Jeremy Healy and a fireworks display. The party starts at 21:00 and is 1,000 baht, including two drinks. T: (076) 324101.
Phuket Town will be host to three nights of free celebrations for the Colourful Phuket Countdown 2014 from December 29 to 31 at Sanam Chai park opposite the Phuket Provincial Hall. Dance and music performances will have a local flavour, culminating with a fireworks show at midnight on the final night.
The Phuket Electronic Music and Dance Festival 2014 is another free event, to be held on Karon beach on December 30 to 31. The festival includes several performances by international and local DJs and a fireworks show at New Year’s Eve.
Another local-style festival, the annual Phuket Red Cross Fair, is set to take place over several days in the New Year period from December 27 to January 6 at Saphan Hin public park in Phuket Town. The fair is a popular event with families, with plenty of food stalls to sample, plus games, arts and crafts and live entertainment on the stage each evening.
