The Poetry Bordello

Ever wanted a private poetry reading? You know you have, oh most clever Travelfish.org reader in Hanoi

Platonic, platonic, they say!

Platonic, platonic, they say!

As luck would have it, the Hanoi Writers’ Collective is staging a seductive-sounding literary and musical event on Saturday June 4 at to raise money for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking via the Centre for Women and Development’s Peace House Shelters, the only shelter for victims of domestic violence in all of Vietnam. And private poetry readings by the collective’s resident talent are to be a part of the sizzling affair, which will also feature live world music (Kulture, Juan Ho, Gam, and Phuong Dang), tribal belly dancing and fire performances and sexy spoken word.

Wear a wild turn-of-the-century frock or hot harem apparel to get a discount on the recommended 100,000 VND entry fee, though people will be let in for less if they can’t afford that, or more would be welcome from those who wish to help out as much as they can.

“Various ‘madames’ and peddlars will be selling tokens throughout the show” for private poetry readings costing 50,000 VND, organiser Andy Angelson told us by email.

“The private reading is a unique opportunity to have a one-on-one experience of poetry. The sessions are held in a separate ‘poetry’ lounge, and each ‘customer’ will have the opportunity to select from one of five poets,” he said. “We’ll each be in fun characters, and we’ll either read from our own work or those of published poets. We’ll each have a ‘menu’ of poems to choose from …’Customers’ are free to engage with the poets and ask questions about the poem, what they think it means, etc. It’s all on the up-and-up of course.”

He did add, dear reader: “Though the event is “sexy” the private readings are strictly platonic!”

This is the first time the collective has held an event like this in Hanoi, though there’s a Poetry Brothel in New York, and a Poetry Bordello in Chicago, Andy said.

“I’m really looking forward to doing this — pushing myself beyond the usual quiet, staid poetry reading and doing something a little crazy, sexy and outlandish. It’s going to be a night of ribald fun, and all for a great cause.”

Don’t forget the Poetry Brothel in Barcelona or Leicester, England! We’ve also held them in Northern Ireland, Greece, LA and Washington DC!
