Back in my college days, nearly every Monday night, my friends and I would go as a team to a local restaurant/bar to play trivia against other college students; we rarely won but still I love to play. So, when I left the comforts of home and came to Saigon I kept my eye out for a few spots that could give me an opportunity to flex my mind muscle. If you are as much a trivia buff as I am, here are a few places that you can go, on different nights of the week, to test yourself.
On Monday head to Chilli Pub on Ho Tung Mau near the Bitexco Financial Tower. At 20:30, teams of no more than four compete through several rounds of questions — usually seven rounds of 10 — with the addition of a picture round given on a sheet of paper. It’s free to play and the winning team usually gets a number of beers, while second place gets a bottle of wine. Also, the team leading at halftime gets a round of shots to “even the playing field”.
If you’re in Pham Ngu Lao on Tuesday then head to Le Pub where, starting at 21:45, teams of no more than five people battle it out in roughly six various subjects consisting of around six questions. The nice thing about trivia at Le Pub is that the questions are displayed on a large screen, preventing you from struggling with the strong accent of a quiz-master. Here too it is free to play and the winning team is the recipient of a bottle of wine.
Finally, if you’re outside of downtown Saigon in the expat areas of the city you can still find trivia nights. At 20:00 on Wednesday, if you happen to be in District 2, go to Buddha Bar on Thao Dien, down the street from the Boat House Café. Here you can play trivia for 100,000 VND — this trivia night is a bit more music based and is unique as the final round consists of a points wager.
On the other side of town, in District 7, you can play trivia at the Boomerang Bistro, which is part of the Crescent. This trivia night can get pretty busy, making a reservation a good idea. Winners at the Boomerang get their tab covered by the house.
