A couple of upcoming events in Hanoi are worth bringing to your attention: opera, history and art exhibitions.
On March 9 and 10, Hanoi Opera House will be home to a German opera night. Conducted by Jonas Alber, the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra will perform excerpts from works including Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Beethoven’s Fidelio and Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Goethe-Institut Hanoi, the Opera House or online and cost 150,000 VND to 450,000 VND.
For those interested in the history of Vietnam from an archaeological perspective comes the International Colloquium on the Archeology of Vietnam. This collaboration between Germany and Vietnam is a prequel to an exhibition taking place in Germany in 2014/15 and will give an overview of Vietnam’s culture, from the Stone Age up to recent past. In particular it will focus on the north of Vietnam and the citadel of Thanh Long. The event will include 22 lectures from renowned experts and takes place at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi from February 29 to March 2.
Attendance places are limited. Apply in advance — and quickly! — with Mr Binh at thihoabinh.tran@hanoi.goethe.org. You will be issued an invitation if your application is successful.
Also at the Goethe-Institut is an interesting sounding exhibition illustrating the changing face of Hanoi. “Houses facing the street” is a solo exhibition by Nguyen The Son, an artist who has focused on other phenomena of Hanoi’s urban landscape in earlier works and now brings together printing and photography to demonstrate the impact that huge billboards have on both the appearance and perception of buildings and streets in the city. The exhibition opens at 18:00 on March 8 and runs to March 28, with a talk from the artist on March 15 at 18:00. Open daily 09:00 to 19:00.
Finally, an art exhibition entitled “Cloudy Sky And Sometimes a Plane Passes by…” by Nguyen The Hung and Dinh Mai Thu Trang is on at the Exhibition House, Ngo Quyen Street, currently until March 5.
