Efficiency of check-in at Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport is hit and miss, and this can lead to frustration, so there’s a certain advantage to checking-in before you arrive.
Jetstar doesn’t offer a web check-in but does have a check-in desk at its office at 206 Tran Quang Khai, on the main road just north of the Museum of History. It’s where the airport bus leaves from, so the expectation is that you’ll check-in and then take the bus to the airport. I tried it out last week and found it to be very straightforward.
The Jetstar website advises that you should arrive at the office 2.5 hours before your flight to catch the bus. The reason for this, I discovered, is that the buses depart 2 hours before Jetstar flights. My flight was at 16:20 therefore the bus left at 14:20. The extra 30 minutes gives you time to check-in, although there was no queue when I was there. If you check-in luggage it will be transferred to the plane for you, saving you the hassle of carting it onto the bus.
Note that the bus is open to all — not just Jetstar customers — but as they leave to coincide with Jetstar flight times, you’ll have to make sure you’re there in plenty of time, or check the flight schedule. The bus is large and reasonably comfortable, costs 35,000 VND and takes 45 minutes to an hour to reach Noi Bai. The stop is walkable from Old Quarter (if your hotel is there), if you’re feeling energetic and don’t have heavy bags, otherwise expect to pay no more than 30,000 VND for a taxi.
If you’re not flying Jetstar you can still check-in before you leave town. Vietnam Airlines provides a web check-in service, available from 40 to two hours before flight departure. Note, however, that you will need to be able to print out the boarding pass and if you have luggage to check-in you’ll still have to do that at the airport, saving little time. If you do check-in online, make sure you’re at the airport 45 minutes prior to flight departure to have your boarding pass checked and stamped.
