Review: Hanoi Cozy Hotel 2

Tucked away between a travel agent and a clothes shop, the entrance to Hanoi Cozy Hotel 2 is as intriguing as it is hard to spot. With no street frontage apart from a doorway, it’s difficult to imagine what hides within.
Located at the southern end of busy Hang Be Street, Hanoi Cozy Hotel 2 is within easy reach of Hoan Kiem Lake and the 36 streets of the Old Quarter, as well as plenty of bars and restaurants, many on the same street.
The narrow hallway that you enter from the street opens up into a spacious reception area, with dedicated travel desk, and all the rooms are located upstairs, reached via a lift.
Rooms really do have a cosy feel to them; not just because some are on the small side, but because they’re decorated in warm tones with dark wood furniture and flooring. Bathrooms are worthy of note: they’re marble tiled and fitted with modern fixtures, including decent showers, and are of a standard you’d expect from far pricier hotels. All rooms have air-con, satellite TV, a fridge / minibar and a desk, plus there’s WiFi throughout. The room price also includes water and fruit. Twin and double bedded rooms are available.
Light is at a premium, with most of the rooms having no windows or windows facing onto a wall or an internal courtyard, and of course there are no views or balconies. But because the overall ambiance is one of a cosy hideaway, it’s not as much of a drawback as it would be in other hotels; in fact it’s the sort of place where you’ll be happy to keep the curtains and blinds drawn and curl up with a good book or a movie.
Staff add to the overall atmosphere — receptionists speak good English and are cheery, and we even got a handshake from the cleaning lady on our last visit. She was particularly happy when we complemented the cleanliness of the rooms; they smell fantastic and cannot be faulted.
There are three categories of rooms, with walk-in rates from US$25 to US$35. Rooms on higher floors are more expensive as they’re quieter, but we’ve never noticed a noise problem on the lower floors. For the style, comfort and facilities the rooms are excellent value, although make sure you get one of the larger rooms if you’re staying for a while.
Cozy Hotel 2 really does what it says on the tin: compared to the hectic activity on the street outside it’s a real oasis of calm, and is warm and comfortable. For the lower end of the midrange it’s a fine choice and will suit both single travellers and couples.
